This anthology is based off a novel concept: what happens when extremely advanced technology meets crude machinery? The theme of cold, alien calculation versus human ingenuity is a core theme of the book. One story about two massive ships that appear above Earth with dramatic consequences will always stand out in my memory due to its mystery and originality.

Awesome collection by some old favorites as well as some wonderful new voices! I bought this because I am a fan of Gini Koch (and her story was WONDERFUL!!!), but I have thoroughly enjoyed the other stories as well - this book has something for everyone and is definitely worth reading!

Five stars if you love steam punk.

A great collection of stories. I'll be honest, I originally got this because I'm a fan and friend of one of the editors. Steam punk isn't generally my cup of tea so I read this over a longer time period than I usually would.

That said, the stories are interesting and strong. I never put down a story mid read and that's how I measure a successful anthology. Many of the stories read like alternate history which I'm a big fan of. Good science fiction and outstanding if you're curious how we would have stood up to aliens a few technological revolutions back.

Do you have authors in speculative fiction that pull you into their world whenever they put words on paper? Ian Tregillis and S.C. Butler does this for me; I know they will always be honest, fantastical and relevant in today's politics and science. But the great thing in a Anthology is that you get introduce to other writers that you might not have read. Clockwork Universe brings Me into a world that I dream of in Steampunk. Is every story great? In my opinion no. But My favorites might not be your favorites and vise-versa. As a Whole? This is a 5 star rated Anthology. Perfect for long trips on an airplane, when the frustration of a novel leaving you hanging as you get off of planes during layovers just won't do. Ha!

Backing a new small press in my first Kickstarter & venturing into a new genre -- CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE: STEAMPUNK VS. ALIENS

Steampunk is a genre of possibilities. What would history look like if this or that is tweaked? Most often, this is addressed through the advent of technology or the removal of someone from the timeline.

The CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE: STEAMPUNK VS. ALIENS anthology goes one step further. They take a steampunk nineteenth century...and add aliens. Would Earth even recognize the threat? It's a nod to industrialism... A high-five to technological advancement... And, above all, kudos to the genius of action-packed prose.

Highlights from the 14 short stories:

"Gracie's Fire" by Leah Cutter: Four aliens walk into a bar...

"Quinta Essentia" by Bradley P. Beaulieu: The Avatar planet comes to us, and it's not an net improvement for our species.

"A Clockwork Alien" by Gini Koch: Airships and alternate universes in the best taste of Koch's Katherine "Kitty" Katt series.

"Heart of the Empire" by Jason Palmatier: An admiral with a steam-powered heart defends London (and its beautiful queen) from an alien invasion on his famous dirigible.

"The Red Queen and the White" by C. E. Pratt: Introducing a twice-blessed daughter of newsprint and student of alchemy, this tale takes the reader through love and despair to face down UFOs in the deserts of the Middle East.

"The Wizard of Woodro Park" by Jean Marie Ward: An avian alien wearing a human suit appears in an Old West town searching for a lost anthropologist from his species. Instead of what he expects, the avian finds a society with advanced technology, and integrated between men and women. Why? Because alien bureaucracy is as cut-throat as our own.

"Of War and Wings" by Tansy Rayner Roberts: Women have wings now, and a war to fight.

"Heart of Clockwork" by S. C. Butler: The steampunk version of the Navy's Blue Angels square off in show and in combat against Jovian aliens.

"Lady Antheia's Guide to Horticultural Warfare" by Seanan McGuire: A vege-alien eats a lady's maid and records her memoirs of the destruction of Earth's civilization for posterity.

With an introduction by Patricia Bray and shared editing credit with Joshua Palmatier, this SF anthology has even more reasons to be considered well-founded in science fiction. CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE is the first publishing effort of Zombies Need Brains, a new small press, and they raised funds for this project through a Kickstarter in which I took part. You can see the credits for all of the book's backers on their website and in the eBook. Some of us who purchased tuckerizations even have our names and those of loved ones in the stories!

who is one of my favorite authors.

I'm going to be honest with y'all....back when this was just a Kickstarter project, I selected a reward level to be "tuckerized" (essentially, have a character named for me) in the story written by Gini Koch, who is one of my favorite authors....

But, I really do think that Joshua Palmatier and Patricia Bray have put together another solid anthology. The theme of this one is "What if Aliens came to Earth during the Victorian Age of Industrialization?" (aka the alt-history urban fantasy sub genre of Steampunk)

The 14 authors in this anthology include the aforementioned Gini Koch, Bradley P. Beaulieu, Ian Tregillis, Seanan McGuire, Jean Marie Rabe, Gail Z. Martin and David L. Martin, Leah Cutter, J. R. Hargenrader, Jason Palmatier, C.B. Pratt, Tansy Rayner Roberts, David J. Fortier, Brad Hafford, and SC Butler. I enjoyed all of the stories, and I think a few of these would make really great full length novels.
