Three stunning newly-restored versions in one set

I got an early preview of this 4K release. I also briefly previewed the new regular Blu-ray version of the film. All versions will be available for purchase on September 19.

There are three different sets available for purchase: the 4K restoration on a 3-disc 4K Blu-ray set (the set that I got), a Limited Edition 3-disc 4K Blu-ray "Light and Sound" Gift Set (I know what's in it but haven't seen it), and a 2-disc remastered regular 1080 Blu-ray. I did not get the extras with the gift set but they include illuminated packaging that plays the iconic 5-tone motif and a booklet with rare archival photos.

All three sets include three restored versions of the film: the 1977 theatrical version, the 1980 Special Edition and the 1997 Director's Cut. You get a lot here and all of these restorations look outstanding. They are clearly better than the earlier releases of the film in 1080 high definition. Of course, the 4K version is totally new and it is outstanding.

The Close Encounters of the Third Kind Blu-ray comes with rare, never-before-released home movies and gags from the set, and the all-new featurette "Three Kinds of Close Encounters." This featurette includes a new interview with director Steven Spielberg on the legacy of the film, as well as new interviews with directors J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) on the impact of Close Encounters.

The 4K restoration comes from the original 35mm camera negatives, and the resolution, detail, and color depth are terrific. This also is an HDR release--which produces brilliant contrasts. Both 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray sets will feature all three restored versions of the movie and the original restored 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

I think we all know the story and the actors well enough: Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, and Melinda Dillon (A Christmas Story) star as well as French film director François Truffaut. The story details first direct contact with aliens (the direct physical contact is contact of the "third kind"). The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards®, including Best Director (Spielberg) and Best Supporting Actress (Dillon). Close Encounters of the Third Kind won for Best Cinematography (Vilmos Zsigmond).

As is the case with most releases, the theatrical trailers, still photos, and other features are present as well. All in all it is an excellent package and very well restored.

THE BEST BLU-RAY VERSION TO GET, NEW 4K HD TRANSFER & NEW EXTRAS

not my favourite Steven spielberg film, my fave is probably JAWS & RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
but still Close encounters is still worth watching if you love SCI-FI films, if you don't then probably not worth watching it's matter of taste
anyway Close encounters has been given new 4k treatment by Sony pictures
which i believe to be amazing picture quality for a 1977 film, No Grain, No dirt, excellent color correction, the best the film has ever looked
the sound quality is the same 5.1 master mix or a 2.0 master stereo mix aswell
there's 3 Discs in a standard black color case, Disc 1 is the 4k version Disc 2 is just the 1080p HD version & Disc 3 is a Digital copy
the Digital copy is just marketing crap in my opinion, i'll just throw them out no use for them
EXTRAS Sony pictures have done Great job adding new & carrying over the old extras aswell
NEW Three kinds of close encounters featurette HD quality
NEW Legacy featurette on the film with Steven spielberg & JJ Abrams and other film makers who have been influenced by this film-HD quality
NEW Stevens Home movies & outtakes that were filmed during the making of close encounters- SD quality
plus all the old extras from the previous blu-ray reissue
30 years of close encounters Documentary & the making of Documentary from the old 2 disc special edition dvd both are in DR quality
plus Deleted scenes, plus the original 1977 Promo featurette, plus Stills photo Gallery
plus the original Theatrical trailer & new remaster trailer
this new 40th anniversary is the best reissue to get of this film mainly cause of the new 4k restoration & new extras

I had the distinct pleasure of previewing this giftset. The pictures do not do it justice! It glows like the spaceship and it also plays the iconic song from the movie. If you are a movie collector or are looking for a holiday gift this set will not disappoint.

Superb movie if you get all versions in 4K, but we have no idea.

Superb movie if you get all versions in 4K in this package, but unfortunately, at this time, there is no info what so ever except the absurdly high price of $76. For that fee, it better also include a ride into space with Roy Neary. Thats why the 3 stars.
