I had an 11 hour flight. I'd knock off the book i had been given in about an hour i said to myself. 11 hours later, i was still underlining, thinking, pondering, praying, dreaming, and underlining some more. It was a book by my new friend, Ken Cochrum of Cru. Ken is responsible for global digital strategies. His doctoral work was in leading across cultures with a distributed team. His book is called CLOSE: Leading Well Across Distance and Cultures. When i was done, i realized how being "CLOSE" to those we lead is so crucial. If you DO lead a team like that, get the book. If you DON'T lead a team like that, GET THE BOOK. Why? Ken's thinking is profound in its depth of concept, prolific in it's external resource sharing, practical in it's examples and powerful in that if leaders read it and get it, we'll accelerate kingdom impact and be ever so much closer to those we lead.

More than a thesis, 'CLOSE" offers the reader biblical, relevant and practical (actionable!) principles.
If you are leader, and desiring to grow your leadership... you'll definitely benefit from it.

Helps explain (without doing tons of your own research) some of the important new paradigms leaders in the 21st century needs to shift towards (or be aligned to) so as to lead and love well (esp. across distance and cultures)

You will find simple-to-grasp, and very do-able suggested steps (e.g. 'How to lead Effective Virtual Meetings, 'On Traveling Well'). Not only that, CLOSE also includes recommended next steps, useful resources, reflective questions etc. that can guide you in the journey on becoming a more effective servant leader.

I found personal benefits in applying some of the principles. As an example, the 'It's more about rhythm than balance' paradigm/principle was particularly timely and helpful, as I (and my family) had to adjust to more work travel this past 2 years.

Great read! Very practical and applicable tools to ministry over distance and diverse cultures. This is basically an expansion of his doctoral thesis so lots of biblography and references. A quick read and each chapter has a section on thinking through the application at the end.

"Close: Leading Well Across Distance and Cultures" is superbly written, based on sound research and practice. This book will help me as I work in today's global village comprised of people from countless cultures who are connected by the internet. I appreciate Ken's personal experiences shared in the book as well as useful tips for me to communicate and lead more effectively in my organization.

Great read for leaders who work cross culturally and/or from a distance with those they lead. Loved the new paradigm for 21st century leadership on p105-107, the practical tips throughout to improve your global leadership competence, Chapters 7-9 are my favorites. This is a great resource on a category of leadership rarely mentioned. These principles will be mainstream leadership practices in another few years.

Pros- lots practical advice on how to increase your global leadership competence.
Cons- lots of studies, data, and advice from people that were helpful at times and hard to wade through at others.
Sum- be a servant leader with integrity who can think, communicate, and build teams well, as well as adjust his/her leadership according to needs of the cultural context.

Though this book will be most valuable for those with leadership roles in global companies or ministries, I found that it had many practical applications for my role as an educator working with students and co-workers from a variety of cultures. The book is organized well and all ideas/suggestions are backed up with research. Resources are listed to provide further study or support for those in leadership roles. "For Reflection and Action" questions at the end of some of the chapters challenge readers to self-reflect and improve their leadership styles/skills/attitudes. Carolyn Franzone
