Actor Zac Edwards needs a bodyguard. After a series of creepy notes become more and more serious, his production company saddles him with Kat – the lovely woman who spilled champagne on him he can’t stop thinking about.
Both Kat and Zac, though, are hiding some emotionally damaging pasts. More than affecting the romance blossoming between them, their willingness to open up could mean life or death.
This book, consistently and without fail, had some great banter between Kat and Zac. It was witty and made me smile, but also built up the romance to be believable, and stronger. I guess that is a personal favorite of mine when it comes to books; strong dialogue is extremely important for my suspended disbelief.
The plot, in the first half of this book, definitely felt rushed to start out. We hop right into the action of bodyguard life, right into our romance from the very first chapter. The speed was keeping me from connecting at first, but by the second half, things take on a better pace and character development of Kat and Zac gets much better – so I settled in. Both characters do become extremely rounded by the end, and I love that Freeman took care to connect them through similar backstories. The drama, and action, building beside their romance made the book even better. It took the focus off the “will they/won’t they” in an interesting and relevant way.
I appreciated that Zac and Kat were very well developed characters, and that even those around them – family and friends – had an impact on the story and made me love it even more. Kat’s niece, Debs, takes a fairly large role, and she was one of my favorite characters: a sassy, sweet teenager with a lot on her plate, but a very caring family. The relationships between Kat, Zac, and their families made this book.
Honestly, this action-packed romcom is underrated. I didn’t expect much, and was therefore blown away. I’ve read some highly anticipated romances lately that weren’t nearly up to this standard. I definitely recommend Up Close & Personal.
I received a copy of this book by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Up Close & Personal was published June 12, 2020.
As a whole I really enjoyed the story! The 2 MC’s had good chemistry and they had really great banter. I loved the moments when they were together, acting more like a budding couple than bodyguard and client. However, it wasn’t super suspenseful even though it still kept me wondering what was going to happen. It felt more centered around the budding relationship between the 2 MC’s rather than the situation they were in. There were several times when key parts of the investigation side felt rushed through or glossed over. It didn’t really feel like anything was exactly missing, just that more details could’ve been helpful in creating more depth to the story. And the pinnacle moment of danger felt over too quickly — everything was building up to the secrets that were being kept and what it meant for keeping the MC safe, but when everything was coming to a head, it was over very quickly and the end result didn’t feel as dangerous as it could’ve been. The potential was there but it was over too quickly and then the focus went right back to how it all was effecting the 2 MC’s as a couple. I feel like I just over explained what basically come down to a need for a better balance between the romance and the “suspense”.
However, with all that said and I still really enjoyed it! It was a quick, fun read and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves The Bodyguard movie!
Zac seems to be a lucky guy with no problems. He comes from a noble British family and he’s a rising star. But someone is stalking him. And all is not what it seems. And Kat has some dark spots in her background.
There was the right mix of suspense and romance and character development in this entertaining read.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.

Thanks again to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of this book, however this did not influence my review of the book and I also purchased the book on its release
After what I thought was a pretty good start, I felt the story became rather boring as the thoughts of the two main characters were continually repeated without too much happening. The actual drama part of the story where Zac's life appeared to be in danger was pretty amateurish compared to a typical book in the thriller genre but of course this is a romcom and really foccused more on the relationship side of matters.
I don't want to be too negative as the book did have the "feelgood" factor and there was plenty to like about it.
I loved how the roles were reversed with the woman being the bodyguard rather than the man and gave it an interesting angle. The chemistry between Kat and Zac was off the charts and the dialogue between them was fun and flirty. The backgrounds of the two characters was also intriguing as it showed that first appearances and initial thoughts of someone can be wrong.
Its a great, fun read that is engaging throughout.
A love story - Chick lit - with some mystery and a bit suspense. A lovely read at bedtime.
