One of the true marks of a horror artist is to create something that is at once completely terrifying and utterly fascinating. It's not about blood, guts, and gore, as anyone who's ever seen Psycho could tell you, but about suspense, story, and the characters themselves. Edgar Allan Poe's stories rank as some of the greatest horror ever written--and that's before the likes of Iggy Pop, Diamanda Galás, Abel Ferrara, and Christopher Walken (chilling, as he reads from "The Raven") got their hands--er, voices--on Poe's words. This two-disc compilation is a success if only for treating Poe's texts in the right manner, with subtle backing music and sounds and restrained, ominous performances from the readers (other fine readings come from Ken Nordine, Dr. John, and Jeff Buckley). One reason for the album's quality may be producer Hal Willner; if you enjoy this, you might also want to check out his work on Weird Nightmare: Meditations on Mingus, The Carl Stalling Project, Vol. 1, and Spare Ass Annie. --Randy Silver

I bought the CD solely for Jeff Buckley's "Ulalume" reading. It's a haunting and amazing version of Poe's poem. However, I was disappointed because it is the only track that can't be downloaded to my iPod. It must be protected so I can only listen to it on my laptop. At least I have it somewhere, but wish I could have it on my iPod so I can listen to it whenever I like. I also enjoyed Christopher Walken's version of "The Raven". He did a very good job interpreting it without over dramatizing the reading. If you're looking for anything Poe related, this would be a good addition to your collection.
Each celebrity story reading's is brilliantly and passionately performed. Great voice talent. Also fun ambient sounds and music added to the performances. I am a huge Poe fan, and this CD is my favorite collection of readings.
After many years out of print, this title is now available at parisrecords.net. Tracks from this project have been viewed millions of times on youtube, but the original distributor has let it lapse. So, we at Paris Records are re-issuing it ourselves. xxx Les Michaels
Too bad this double disc set is out of print, Iggy Pop nails his recitation of Telltale Heart. Diamanda Galas has you weeping at her recitation of The Black cat, and don't even get me started on Christopher Walken doing The Raven. I wish they would re-print this or put it on a vinyl.
