About the Author
Carmen Mickley is a stay at home mom and lives in Waco, Texas. She and her husband were recently blessed with their first born son, Salem, who was also born with Apert Syndrome. Carmen takes care of Salem while her husband works very hard to provide for all of them. Her overall goal is to become a great advocate not only for her son but for other children with special needs as well. The inspiration to make a difference in children’s lives and to write this poem “ A Closer Look” comes from the joy that is received from her very persistent courageous son, who has broken all barriers and doubts placed before him. “I hope one day people will accept all children with differences, for their loving brave characteristics and give them a chance to be loved; you just don’t know what you’re missing until you do.”

It is her hope that someday ALL children will be loved and accepted for who they are and not what they look like. I would encourage all of you who work with children or are parents to purchase this book, to share this link with others, and to help teach young children that while we all may look a little different than one another, we are the same inside and are ALL beautifully and wonderfully made.
I can see families sitting down to read this book together, to look at the pictures, to allow their children to ask curious questions, and for the children and parents to truly take a closer look...to see that ALL children have love and joy to share with one another regardless of varying abilities or disabilities. Teachers can use it in classrooms. Churches can use it in children's church. It's a great, easy to understand resource to start the conversation with young children about acceptance and love.
