Assembly was fairly easy, although the diagrams provided leave quite a bit to be desired. If you are completely lost in assembling anything more complex than a sandwich, you'll want to find someone else to do it for you...but if you can puzzle out some of the less-than-precise instructions, you'll be fine. The assembly instructions indicate that glue (not included) must be used to hold some of the wooden dowels in place, but I opted to skip that step and see no loss in sturdiness as a result. You will need to have a philips head screwdriver and a small hammer available.
As far as construction goes, I did find one dowel hole which had been drilled far too deep, but this was "fixed" by stuffing a piece of plastic into the hole. Again, the instructions are not the most detailed I've ever seen, so you'll want to be careful in ensuring that all of the finished sides are facing the same direction before screwing anything in (particularly if you do use glue). However, once you have everything lined up properly the screws go in easily and the finished product looks as nice as can be expected in the price range, and it is quite sturdy. Additional wall-mounting brackets are provided for those who plan to stack units.
The cubby holes on the second level are pretty small, which will limit their usefulness. Large enough for a few books or compact discs, but you're not going to get much more in there. With the backing nailed in place it's also unlikely you'll be able to use them for shoes, unless you wear a particularly small size. The spaces on the bottom are much wider, however, and the backing strip does not cover these. The firmness of the build allows for larger items to be stored on top as well; I currently have a laundry hamper sitting on the top shelf, with no bowing apparent.
Overall, worth the $35-40 price point, but not something you can use in place of a dresser or bookshelf and certainly not an item to be passed down for generations. I'll update as necessary over time.
Update 3/21/17: More than a year later, nothing has changed. Unit one is still supporting a heavy laundry hamper and showing no signs of wear, while my old CPU has found a place atop the second unit which is also holding up beautifully. At this point I can comfortably say that only things holding this item back from a 5-star review are the poor assembly instructions included and the small storage areas inside the units. Other than those two items, a very well-engineered product which is quite fairly priced.
First problem - it's not as easy to assemble as Ikea stuff, and requires wood glue. Not a huge deal, but was a little disappointed that it would take a bit longer to assemble than expected.
Second problem - instructions are missing a lot of simple but important tips and information. This results in lots of time wasted, and not realizing you've done something wrong until you are well into the project and have to undo your work.
Third problem and the deal breaker - the quality is AWFUL.... AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. I can't say it enough. The pieces were manufactured very poorly, with holes being drilled too deeply. The wood is like sawdust... not compact enough, not enough glue... it splits left and right. even the little dowels break through the other side of the board with very gentle tapping. Not even hammering, but just letting the weight of the hammer drop an inch onto the dowel. As gentle as can possibly be done.
With the wood breaking apart at every step, I realized it wasn't worth my time to assemble something that will look like garbage before I even finish (and certainly won't last), so I stopped and literally threw it all away.
So bummed to have wasted $34 that I can't afford to blow. I will try to contact the seller and will update this review if I hear back.
- Robust packaging prevented any damage to components.
- Correct dimensions, exactly as pictured once assembled.
- Useful, decent looking, and inexpensive furniture, organizes closet storage.
- Easy to confuse the left and right cross-beams. They have different hole sets.
- Glue is recommended for keeping the dowels in place, but no glue is included in the package.
OK- to be helpful here -
- It is the only one I could find on Amazon of the exact size and shape I needed. Only game in town!!
- It isn't TOO expensive (although it's still overpriced by a lot). I think I paid like $34. Should have been $15.
-It is sturdy enough to hold some weight. Functional. That's important.
- The instructions literally include using glue to put it together. (!!!) So. There's that.
- The back side of the thing is flimsy cardboard- not even pressboard.
- It is SO easy to screw up the assembly.
As i was assembing it, I kept accidentally poking through the pressboard with screws and ruining it. See photo for evidence of the damage I did while attempting to screw it together. This happened in 2 or 3 places. The pressboard buckles really easily and the sides are thin (relative to the diameter of the screws). So it's easy to poke through by mistake.
- I was only able to get the whole thing together by having some of the front edges facing the back. Which is probably my own fault. But in my defense, it is quite easy to line it up wrong, and then not be able to take it out because it's already glued in.
Because of this, my finished product looks absurd (luckily I am lining it with childproof strips that will cover up the errors).
All told I would say to only buy this if you really have no better options. Or if you intend to use it somewhere really unimportant.
It's crappy, but if you don't mind that- it does the job!
EDIT: One week later, I put too much weight on the top of this thing and it cracked. Oh well. Amazon was very kind in allowing a return.
