First and foremost, I am glad the authors wrote the book, as there is absolutely nothing else out there other than scholarly articles (most of them not accessible to non-MDs without subscriptions to costly journals) or anecdotal patient forums. But from a critical standpoint: the text could have benefited vastly from being edited or even just proofread, as there are numerous and distracting errors in punctuation and a lot of repetition. I found the tone overly didactic; I think the writers were trying for a folksy rapport, but they went overboard. I was also troubled by two discrepant messages that permeated the entire text. On the one hand, there are numerous mini-case studies, including that of one of the authors, detailing years of multiple failed treatments and frequent recurrences. On the other hand, the authors keep hastening to try and reassure the reader that eventually virtually everyone recovers. Yet this optimistic claim seems to lack any basis, or at least none is presented in the text. Which leaves the reader to wonder: does the illness just spontaneously disappear at some point? If so, what is the theory behind that? Or do recoverers hit on some specific formula that works, and if so, what is it? The use of probiotics is the second-most frequently mentioned remedy (after antibiotics) that c. diff sufferers seem to have found to be helpful. Yet there are no controlled studies, and thus no body of clinical evidence, to back up their efficacy, which renders their use just another "may not help but probably can't hurt" measure. The book is certainly not devoid of useful information. Still, one can only hope that it is just the first in what will become a growing layperson-accessible body of work about a disease that has become a major menace, which can now be acquired quite casually and can create complete havoc, both physically and emotionally.
