There are three sound options... play (monkey sounds), relax (waterfall), sleep (lullaby). Plus you can record your own voice up to 10 seconds. The monkey has velcro hands to wrap around a crib or stroller if you choose.
It does shed a little bit, but I've only noticed a few loose fluffs, not really bad. I would definitely keep an eye on baby when playing with it due to the little sheddng I have seen. The minimal shedding would be no problem for older kids, however.
The sound box is rather large (about the height/width of an android smartphone, but thicker) and sticks out in the back. This rectangular box slides into the monkey's back, with one velcro tab across the center made of the monkey's "fur". This allows you to easily push the buttons, but can be a nuisance. Easy directions to record your own voice are printed on the box in colorful arrow stickers. The sounds play for 30 minutes then shuts off by itself, unless you turn it off prior to that.
When washing, you can easily slide the box out. It washes up very nice and looks as good as new...still soft as can be.
Even with the flaws mentioned above, we love this monkey, including our baby, and would definitely purchase again.
We have a bedtime routine, as do most parents I imagine. Things change a little bit night-to-night, but she will never, ever go to sleep without me singing her two favorite nursery rhymes. We share lots of hugs, and she settles in. First she started having trouble with the dark, and no amount of light soothed her. (We tried everything from standard night lights to leaving the overhead light on; I bought this projector: [...] which thrilled her so much she forgot the room was even dark.) Then it was just hugs. She'd be up and out of bed constantly asking for hugs, for me to cuddle with her 'til she fell asleep, and for me to sing to her again. Battles at bedtime would go on for HOURS before she'd finally stay in bed and fall asleep.
ENTER THIS FANTASTIC MONKEY. I showed her how to play the different sounds (a bonus for an older kid, since they can operate it themselves), and recorded myself singing the first line of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" for the voice option. The monkey has velcro on his hands, so I showed her how he could wrap around her for hugs, and how she could hear my voice any time she wanted just by pushing a button.
She didn't get out of bed ONCE. Normally up-and-down at least a dozen times, and this kid was happy as a clam staying snuggled in with her monkey.
The only downside to it is that if your child pushes the "record" button, they'll unwittingly erase anything you record.Read more ›
CON: It does shed bad. Ours shed for about two weeks and then was fine. At about 4 weeks though the velcro that holds the sound box inside became basically non existent. The sound box falls out frequently, which defeats the purpose of the monkey, since our baby likes it because it sounds like Mama.
OVERALL: Love the toy. Have already purchased extras and some for expecting family. I paid only 14.00 though. Would not pay more than 20.00 given the flaws. The sound machines (we have the giraffe) also work well and don't have the frustration of the sound box falling out. Our son likes the giraffe too, but not as much as the monkey.

My daughter got this when she was 3 months. It was passed down to her from my younger sister. It was soft and plush at one point. Now it's ratty and disgusting. Read morePublished 17 months ago by TWilliams
