While hiking in the mountains with his parents, Albert tumbles off a cliff—but is saved by the cloud children who utter magic words that make him very light and keep him from falling. Albert has a wonderful time jumping, swimming, painting, and racing in the sky with the cloud children. That is until he remembers his mother and father and his own little bed at home. It takes the cloud queen, the man in the moon, and a few more magic words to return Albert to earth.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It's hardly a new theme: a child finds himself in a new world where each day offers yet another fantastic experience. Eventually, however, the child yearns for the familiarity of home. In the hands of the incomparable Burningham, this familiar story takes on new depth and poignancy while never losing the giddy appeal of adventure. A stunning book . . . It promises to resonate with readers of all ages."  —

"A matter-of-fact tone and economy of words, in combination with whimsical illustrations, create a buoyant, high-flying fantasy greater than the sum of its parts."  —

John Burningham studied illustration and graphic design at the Central School of Art, graduating with distinction in 1959. Many illustration commissions followed including iconic posters for London Transport, before the publication of Borka: the Adventures of a Goose with No Feathers, John’s first book for children (Cape, 1963) which won the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration and heralded the beginning of an extraordinary career.

John Burningham has since written and illustrated over thirty picture books, that have been translated and distributed all over the world. These feature his classic and much loved children’s books including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, by Ian Fleming (Jonathan Cape, 1964); Mr Gumpy’s Outing (Jonathan Cape, 1970) also awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal; Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne (Jonathan Cape, 1972); The Shopping Basket (Random House, 1980); The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame (Penguin/Puffin, 1983); Granpa (Jonathan Cape, 1984) later made into an animated film and Oi! Get off our Train (Jonathan Cape, 1989) and various books for adults England (Jonathan Cape, 1992); France (Jonathan Cape, 1998); The Time of Your Life (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2002) and When We Were Young (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2004).

Tug of War was republished in 2012, and a special edition of Borka, celebrating 50 years in print, was published in June 2013. Picnic appeared in the autumn of 2013 and The Way to the Zoo was published in the UK in 2014. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is celebrating its 50th year in print with a limited edition in hardback to be published in 2015.

John is married to the illustrator, Helen Oxenbury. They have three children, three grandchildren and a dog named Miles. They live in London.

John Burningham is one of my favorite authors and illustrators. This imaginative book did not disappoint me. I would especially recommend his book about Harvey Slumfenburger's Christmas Present. The ending is perfect, but I won't give it away. I always read it to my Kindergarten students until I retired.

We have the British edition of this book--Burningham is British--and it is one of my 2-year-old son's favorites; and last week, when I saw my 2-year-old niece, she wanted me to read it to her three times in two hours. At first I thought perhaps they might be scared by the idea of Albert falling off the cliff on his hike with his parents, but they weren't because the next thing you know, he meets all kinds of new friends. The story is an original and unsentimental way to help kids figure out not only that "there's no place like home," but also that you can appreciate other places while you're away from home, and that you can always find company and be taken care of. This is great for families who travel a lot. And of course Burningham's illustrations are amazing. In this book, he does something different from his others--he uses photographs as the basis for some of the pictures, adding his amazing interpretations. And he never talks down to kids or plays to sappiness or sentimentality. If you don't have MR. GUMPY'S OUTING and MR. GUMPY'S MOTORCAR, I'd recommend those as well.

I love the illustrations in this book. I use it when I teach my Yoga kids classes. It is also great for primary elementary classes when studying clouds.

This book is read over and over again. A whimsical tale that stretches the imagination. The illustrations add to the story without filling all the gaps to leave room for imagination to tZke over.

3.0 out of 5 stars for older children

I have got this story for my 3 years old encouraged by other reviews but it contains an episode where people fall off a cliff (and presumably die - it is not said straightforwardly) so it is not suitable (in my opinion) for very young children. It ends on a positive note though.
