Ellison is back, along with Mother, Grace, Hunter and Det Jones. The characters are extremely likeable and you enjoy spending time with them. These are people you could join for a cup of coffee or to thwack some golf balls. And characters are truly recurring. Characters who had larger roles in previous books haven't just disappeared - they are still there, just maybe not as important. This adds continuity, reality and richness to the series.
I appreciate the attention to detail in the physical and social setting. And I don't just mean the country club. Divorcees are faced with losing everything while women's lib is inspiring women to think differently. Ellison navigates this new landscape while juggling her love life, raising a teenager alone, and being pursued by a murderer. As a Kansas Citian who grew up in the 70's, I love the visit to the museum and the presence of the igloo in the story. (The igloo was always the highlight of school field trips.) I know that duck pond in Loose Park and the fountain at the Alameda. This detail not only makes the story real, but the well drawn setting lends strong support to the story. I love an author who takes the time to get it all right. I generally can't read more than one or two books by an author - I tire of their tics and bad habits - but Ms. Mulhern crafts balanced, well written stories that don't bog down or rely on the same words or situations.
Ellison Walford Russell is a widow living with her daughter Grace. Born into the country club set because of her mother Frances Walford, Ellison could live her life it with Grace and her painting. Frances Walford isn’t about to let that happen.
In book 1 we saw Ellison find the murder of her husband Henry’s mistress, book 2, Ellison does everything possible to find the love of Bobby Lowell’s life and deliver his message. Now Ellison is faced with why someone is trying to kill her.
With the unexpected arrival of her Aunt Sis (sister to Frances) who has always been a free spirited individual, Sis left right after college and headed to Europe. Sis is hiding a secret which to reveal would spoil the surprise for you. The confutations between Aunt Sis and Frances add another twist to the story.
Aunt Sis has just settled in when Ellison’s sister Marjorie arrives. Marjorie plans to leave her husband Gregg and someone unknown is in the picture.
Frances Walford has planned an entire weekend of events. Ellison trying to stay as far from her mother is standing talking to friends when a marble bust falls and almost knocked Ellison unconscious.
Detective Anarchy Jones enters the picture. The interactions between Ellison and Anarchy lead to almost of edge of being involved with each other and then pull back. Meanwhile hopeful boyfriend attorney Hunter Taftt and occasionally date of Ellison’s just doesn’t have the sparks that Anarchy does.
Poor Ellison every glare from Frances Walford drops her confidence down a notch. At some time in the future Ellison will address her Mother, but not now.
Ellison’s friend Libba is part of the story, and housekeeper Aggie who Ellison would be lost without and you have the full cast of characters.
From page 1 to the end you will be pulled into the story. Every time you think ok got who is causing the attempted killing the story twists. Hope Ms. Milhern is writing away with the next chapter of Ellison’s life.
