I really liked the Bates hooks when I tried them since they pulled through 3 loops or more loops without snagging most of the time, but since I started working with cotton yarn (worsted weight-Sugar & Cream) I've noticed they do have a problem sometimes with that.
The Boye hooks (or hooks in that style) just didn't work as well for me as the Bates. My arm started hurting since I had to work so hard to keep the pointy part from snagging a little on whatever type of yarn. It's my own style of crocheting, I'm sure: I hold the hook in a "knife" grip rather than a "pencil" grip, so I have to move my whole arm around to make some hooks work, and even then, pulling through 3 or more loops of cotton yarn is usually a problem.
Not with this hook! Cotton, acrylic, wool blend (didn't have any 100% wool to try), doesn't matter -- this hook glides smoothly through anything, even when I'm pulling through 3 or more loops. Even when I'm crocheting very tightly! And since the head sticks out just a tidge more than the Bates, I have no problems grabbing the yarn (which I occasionally did with those hooks).
And the ergonomic grips are soft and really make the hook easy to use for long periods of time. Which is something my oldish hands really appreciate.
Really, there's nothing I don't like about these hooks except the fact that they're really expensive for someone on a limited budget like me. I'll be saving up to buy the set, though. And since making amigurumi is my newest goal, and the tight stitching with that is tough on my hands, I'm getting another single hook in the size I use for that.
I went back to my Soft Touch hooks, but recently purchased some yarns that tended to split badly. I switched to the Amour hook and found it handled these yarns much better, as the hook is deeper (though not inline) and did a better job of grabbing the yarn in one piece. I also seemed to have more power and leverage with this longer, sturdier handle, and found that by adjusting my grip a little, I could crochet faster and with no wrist pain. That did it, I had to have the set! I ordered it yesterday and can't wait for the hooks to get here! I would advise long-time crocheters in particular to order just one hook first to try; this non-tapered handle may not work for everyone, but it's certainly worth finding out.
