Anna, Liz, and Melinda investigate the "January Club" by attending one of their yearly open house meetings because of a connection they found to Melinda's father. They learn "the club" is basically composed of a few people who practice various occult practices. Anna discovers the case she's working on for the police ties into this weird club.
Karin's writing is perfect for this genre. We're familiar with Anna Denning after three previous books, and Karin keeps Anna's voice, personality, and actions steady for what we expect of her character. Between Anna and Liz, theories run rampant as they try to figure out the real purpose of the January Club and the odd relationships formed by its members.
If you like cozy mysteries with an edge, The Club by Karin Kauffman is definitely worth your time. Entertaining, informational, clever, and mysterious with a touch of the supernatural, The Club's complex plot and the duo of Anna and Liz working together proves to be enjoyable reading.
Anna Deering is a genealogist, not a detective, but somehow she always ends up solving murders. Anna, along with her dog, Jackson, friend Liz and now boyfriend, Gene, have become my friends. I love these books.
Someone has been murdered in Elk Park, Colorado. Anna has been hired by Melinda to find out her family's genealogy. Anna discovers that the murder, which the police have asked her help with, is connected with the genealogy hire. So she sets out to do what she does best: investigate. Anna has become so good at this that she is hoping the police with hire her as a full time consultant.
The January Club, a strange club formed 17 years ago, keep turning up in the investigation. This club is dabbling in the occult and Anna is determined to find out everything she can about its members and what they have to do with Melinda's family and the murder out in the woods. But wait! There are more murders!
I loved this book. Karin Kaufman tells a good story, writes a great mystery and keeps the reader guessing until the very end. I had no clue who the culprit was until the reveal at the end. She's that good. The books are not scary enough to keep you up at night, unable to sleep with fright, but have just enough of the scare factor to draw you in.
I do hope Kaufman has more Anna Deering mysteries for her loyal readers. Like me. I don't want to say goodbye to Anna Deering. I've grown to know her and want to see what else she has going on in her life.
*I was given a copy of this book by the author and was not required to leave a positive review.
As for the bad guys, they are Kaufman's best yet. They are a shifting, sometimes pitiful, sometimes despicable, and completely believable bunch. I didn't unravel the mystery ahead of the heroine, but there are revelations all through the book that kept me guessing right alongside her. The plot is complicated and fascinating, with a satisfying ending. Things are changing in Elk Park. You won't want to miss this book!
Once again, I had no clue "whodunit" and with such a cast of suspicious, well-drawn characters, I dare you to figure it out before the end! :) This series just doesn't disappoint and I'm waiting for the next!
This book series is absorbing intricately spun. I truly hope there is a book 5. I read the entire series in a week!
