Coach Carter was based upon a true story of a high school basketball coach in Richmond, California a city I grew up in. It was a typical inner city story of kids in a rough neighborhood who had to be worked into shape by a tough coach. He teaches them fundamentals of basketball, what it means to be a team, to take academics seriously, etc.
This is the kind of role that Samuel L. Jackson excels at. He gets to act tough with an attitude and do a bunch of yelling. At the same time he has a heart and cares about his players. The highlight turns out to be when he forfeits games and ends practices until the kids can get their grades up. That leads to a confrontation with the principal and the school board who feel that sports is more important than academics.
The movie is predictable but still enjoyable. Surprisingly there’s not that much basketball action because the story is about all the stuff that happens off the court.
