The main conflict in this story was obvious to me from very early on in the book. Which was okay, because then I just enjoyed the story as I waited until we got to 'that' part. And there was so much to enjoy! Like other Avon Gale books I have read (seriously, read any of them- they are all awesome), the characters are written with enough detail that the reader feels they know them. The characters are funny! In the case of this book, they are both so sassy. It's like they are trying to top each other with scandalous, sexy, snarky comments. Example: while working a puzzle (yes, I said puzzle) Troy says to Shane, "Find the edge pieces. They the ones with edges on them. I don't know how rudimentary your puzzle skills are." And another time, when reporting that Xavier has a crush on Drake, Shane amends, "The hockey player, not the Canadian rapper." Troy responds with, "There's a Canadian rapper named Drake?" and then "There are Canadian rappers?"
I could honestly go on and on with the humorous moments between these two characters (and other characters in the book). I have lots of them highlighted on my kindle. This book will be into my 'favorites' collection of my kindle, with all the other books in the series. Now....I will start the wait for the next one. (I hope it's Xavier's turn!)
In any event I liked that Troy and Shawn are different, both a little bit older which is always appreciated, both hot heads, but also at heart nice guys who after some confusion figure out what they want , I did. But the emotional pull for me just wasn't there as much as it was in the other books and I cannot figure out why.
It was fun to see Drake and Misha and Max too.
3.5 - 4 stars
I love Avon Gale's writing and am a huge hockey fan. There was so much to love in this book, but it's hard not to measure against the previous two books in the series and find it just a bit lacking. Really, though, Mischa, Max, Laurent, and Isaak are four of my all-time favorite characters, so that's to be expected. Our MCs here may not have made quite as big an impression, but I did love them and their romance. I was thrilled to see favorite characters from past books and I can't wait to get a happy ending for Xavier. (I also hope to see more of River.) The book actually took quite a while to hit its stride, but it was really so worth it.
