In any event I liked that Troy and Shawn are different, both a little bit older which is always appreciated, both hot heads, but also at heart nice guys who after some confusion figure out what they want , I did. But the emotional pull for me just wasn't there as much as it was in the other books and I cannot figure out why.
It was fun to see Drake and Misha and Max too.
3.5 - 4 stars
Fast forward twenty years and now in his mid-forties and comfortably out; Troy wants to turn the Ravens’ into a respectable team. He turned down an Assistant Coach position with the National Hockey League to step down to the minors to be Head Coach of St. Savoy’s last team. St. Savoy was a bully. He bullied his team and he forced them to play dirty and bully players on other teams. Troy can never be accused of being emotionally deep; but he obviously has some unresolved issues and his decision to coach the Ravens is clearly about achieving some form of closure. Aside from the fact that I don’t particularly care for Troy’s name, or his nick name (Cally): he’s otherwise a likable character – sort of a lovable, perpetually grumpy curmudgeon with very little filter.
His love interest is his team’s newest winger, signed by the General Manager. Shane “Who Had So Much Potential That Never Materialized” North at 36 is ready to wrap up his hockey career. It never took off the way everyone predicted and now there isn’t even an AHL team interested in picking him up. The offer by one of his former coaches – now GM of the Ravens’ – gives him the opportunity to end his career on his own terms. Shane’s known to have bad attitude, to be a bit argumentative, contrary for the sake of being contrary and a hothead- so in other words – he’s “Troy – lite”. Shane’s still in the closet – but not very far back. He also has a thing for pushy, bossy jerks – which means that Troy is totally his type.
Troy and Shane start out just having a good time. Yes the whole coach/player thing makes it an entirely inappropriate relationship – but they’re both grown adults and know what they want – and the taboo relationship vibe works really well for them. Combined with their penchant for having sex in fairly public places, I’d say they’re not all that concerned about keeping things on the down-low. Eventually feelings come in to play. Their relationship is….nice. They have decent chemistry. It’s just not very….”afternoon delight-y”. They’re not especially…memorable. There’s a little bit of drama that gets wrapped up very quickly and no angst.
I love Avon Gale's writing and am a huge hockey fan. There was so much to love in this book, but it's hard not to measure against the previous two books in the series and find it just a bit lacking. Really, though, Mischa, Max, Laurent, and Isaak are four of my all-time favorite characters, so that's to be expected. Our MCs here may not have made quite as big an impression, but I did love them and their romance. I was thrilled to see favorite characters from past books and I can't wait to get a happy ending for Xavier. (I also hope to see more of River.) The book actually took quite a while to hit its stride, but it was really so worth it.
