I'm a 22 year old female, 5'4, roughly 125 pounds. As anxious as I was to get this piece into my living room and start putting it together, I was also nervous about the difficulty, given the non-uniformity of the pieces.
As I opened it, the pieces were nicely and neatly packaged, and the screws and dowels were in it's own seperate packaging inside, (there were plenty). I recently moved, so I've been piecing together a lot of new furniture. (I didn't have much before - was traveling too much) So, that into consideration, I've gotten into a sort of rhythm with instructions and how to read them. I usually put everything together by myself, which included this bookshelf.
I was worried that it would take awhile from other reviews, I had put aside the last hours of the night just to piece together this shelf. It turns out, I needed no more than a little over an hour to sort out all the pieces, prepare them, and build the shelf. However, I did have to pull apart and fix certain sections towards the end.
The instructions booklet is by far the worst I've seen, considering the actual need for guidance. I didn't even bother reading the written instructions because they just confused me more, and weren't detailed. Pay CAREFUL attention to the pictures and you can easily get it done! It helped me by positioning myself exactly the way the shelf was in the booklet, and never straying from that angle.
The silver grain doesn't bother me, and it does indeed look mostly black once put together.
Packaging was excellent and not a thing was even so much as scratched.
I'm extremely happy with this purchase! I have had an eye on it for months before I had the money to purchase it, and I don't regret it at all. My Roommate wants one now, too.
***(5/19/2016 - Three years later and I STILL love this bookshelf. It is a little crooked now, for sure. But that could have been due to my poor handyman skills. But it's really not that bad at ALL. It's also been through three rough home moves, and several flips and turns from me switching it from vertical to horizontal display. Currently it is Horizontal. I obviously use it for less "Modern interior design" purposes, and it works just as well! The third picture was from back in 2013 when I first set it up. )***
***(8/10/2017 - Another move down and it's still holding up. (still leaning, never did fix it) No current picture attached. This is still by far one of my favorite bookshelves.)***
Once you learn the secret, it isn't too hard, just time consuming. But, if you have ever put any complicated flat pack type thing together, it is what is expected.
The 3 stars is because one of the case's shelves were crumpled and one has veneer chipped, but I was able to hide these by turning that side to the wall. Also, because the instructions are confusing and I had to take apart everything and start over. Now that they are up, I love them, and they look great. Just set aside an afternoon (estimated 40 minutes my a$$), make sure you understand that things are NOT supposed to align and have a good understanding of its construction by using the PICTURE, and have patience, and it will be ok.
