The Cob Builders Handbook: You Can Hand-Sculpt Your Own Home, 3rd Edition Tapa blanda – 1 Marzo 1998

4.7 de 5 estrellas 123 calificaciones

Cob (an old English word for lump) is old-fashioned concrete, made out of a mixture of clay, sand, and straw. Becky Bee's manual is a friendly guide to making your own earth structure, with chapters on design, foundations, floors, windows and doors, finishes, and of course, making glorious cob.

"I believe that building with cob is a way to recreate community and experience the joy of working together while taking back the right to build our own homes and look after our Mother Earth."

She loves doing something that makes sense in a world where lots of things don't.

This book starts off with the practical questions you must first ask yourself and answer in order to know where you're going to build your cob house and what things to consider w/your location. It also helps you think about how the design should be to suit your needs. It has simple, but effective drawings for visualizing what to do and what the materials and designs look like. I stumbled upon the idea of cob building on the internet and bought this book and others, as I think it's an excellent idea to empower yourself w/the all the tools you need to become self sustainable. It gives you more self worth and makes you less scared, having to depend on so many other people and factors in our modern day society. I don't want a manufactured home built w/possibly cancerous materials. I'd rather be more in control of my surroundings. Although as this book points out, it's wise to find others w/your same interests that can help you create your home as it is a huge task.

This was a great supplement to the many other books I have read on cob structures. I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s lighthearted conversational tone through the book, I felt like I was getting to know a new friend who just happened to know all about building cob structures. Highly recommend.

This was a gift for my fiance on his birthday. He loved it. The book has virtually every bit of information one could hope to find about cob building. This is the perfect book if you seriously want to build a cob structure. We are planning on starting small by building a couple of dog houses for our dogs before we actually build our own home. The book is very easy to follow and covers every detail you can imagine. You can tell this is a labor of love for the author and we appreciate her sharing her extensive knowledge so that beginners like ourselves can build a cob structure like an old pro. iIt is definately a must read for anyone seriously considering cob building.

This book is simple but very helpful. I am not sure when I will ever build a cob structure, but the process fascinates me, and Becky Bee shows just how simple it really is, and how cost effective! She speaks about the artistry, the construction and the legal issues surrounding cob building, and uses simple and useful diagrams to illustrate her points. I loved the section on foundations, as it was very inclusive of different types of foundations. I really want to try cob building and will definitely be using this book when I do.

Great honest speaking. I really wanted to find out more about building dome shapes, but unfortunately she says she knows nothing about it. It's okay though. I was impressed with the assortment of tips and find this overall, a very practical and enlightening book.

If you think you're interested in Cob building...and you only buy one book about it...this is the book you want. Hands on, no baloney, get down in the mud and build a house. Becky Bee writes a wonderfully concise and detailed guide on how to bring your 'dream' house to fruition. It's an artistic 'how to' that doesn't step on your creativity...just tells you how to get the danged thing out of your imagination and into the real world.
BTW...if you don't have a lot of friends you might be in trouble cuz this is a labor intensive way to build a house. I saw one up in Sonora, California that was just sooooo cool.
Thanks Becky...I think you're the best!!

This book is interesting and provides basic cob building techniques along with ideas and suggestions to give it a try for yourself. It is a fascinating read and should inspire the reader to broaden their understanding of an alternative house building technique as well as the desire to learn even more. It arrived before the est, shipping date, well wrapped and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from this shipper again! Worth the time and money!

Years ago, I became fascinated with buildings made of Earth. This book was my introduction to how to play in cob. So when I learned that it was available on Kindle, I had to get it! Learn the joys of Mudding and how almost anyone can build something lasting from Earth, Straw, Sand, and Water. A magical process that feels a lot like play.😁

    I love this book.
It could benefit from some photos, but it does have a lot of very good drawings.
The text is very easy to follow and understand, and the style is so enthusiastic and warm-hearted that, reading it, I feel that I've made a friend!
It makes me want to get out there and craft my own home; and it makes me believe that I really could do it.

5.0 de 5 estrellas THE cob book
Calificado en Reino Unido el 26 de agosto de 2019
Comes from America so takes a couple of weeks but worth the wait. Simple, well explained. Covers everything I learnt during a week long cob course that cost a few hundred pounds! It may be an old book but the cob building process hasn't changed for centuries so makes no difference. Good book, happy customer.

This a great book and probably the most easiest to understand on the general building principles of cob houses.
Gave this as a present to my wife and although we haven't yet started building one , this will be the go to book when we do.

I started reading this book not even really knowing what cob is and now I feel that I could build in cob myself. It seems to be a thorough book, full of diagrams and a fun, but informative read. Its title should really be 'An Idiots Guide to Building in Cob'
