The Cobalt original MJ multi-use submersible and external pump and power head is built to last under the harshest conditions. Ideal for protein skimmers, wave makers, calcium reactors, nano aquariums, under gravel filters, terrariums and hydroponic applications. Made in Italy.

I went in search for a replacement for my sanity and to reduce my tank temp. I found reference that Cobalt Aquatics had picked up the original Italian manufacturer of the Maxijets as a supplier and decided to give one a shot. I ordered this MJ900 and installed it today. Immediately the difference was clear, it is silent...not a peep. The tank temp is dropping, but that's to be expected when going from a 1200 class (20w) pump to a 900 class (8w).
It feels solid, it's silent and it doesn't heat up the tank. Hard to beat for only a loss of 65gph (230gph vs 294gph) and with the extra "budget" of heat I was able to add a Koralia Nano 425 for even MORE flow.
I decided to purchase a Sicce, Tunze, Eheim or a Cobalt Aquatics pump (made in Italy). A source that I trust recommended the Cobalt Aquatics MJ900 (230 gph) pump to begin with. So, it arrived yesterday and I installed it today. There is a dramatic reduction in pump related noise coming from the MJ900 vs. the original Coralife S-700 even though the MJ900 moves 27% more water per hour than the S-700!
Note to Coralife BioCube 14 owners: When the suction cup & mounting brackets are attached to the MJ900 the assembly will not fit into the available space in chamber #3. What I did to isolate the hard shell of the pump somewhat from any direct physical contact with the aquarium structure is this: I took the three suction cups and stuck one against the bottom front, rear and left sides of chamber #3, thus creating little rubber stand-offs against which the pump could rest. Then I cut the return hose just short enough that it suspended the pump off of the chamber bottom, again to eliminate direct pump to aquarium contact. There is still a hum associated with this arrangement but much less than what it was with the S-700. Since I would like the aquarium to run as silently as possible I will probably at least give the other pumps mentioned a try over time. For now, the MJ900 has successfully reduced the hum to an 'acceptable' level. I withheld the fifth star because it doesn't run silently which is what I was hoping it would do. Other than that, the pump seems to be well built and I would expect it to last for a long time.
Three months ago I moved it to my 55gal, took out the carbon bag and put the aeration tube back on. It's still running like a champ. We have hard water so I take it apart every 2-3 weeks and get rid of any lime deposits.
It's very quiet in an in-tank set up without the bubbler. It's a little noisy with the bubbler tube on it but no more so than a good sized air stone and pump would be. I highly recommend this powerhead. I have a less than spectacular Fluval C4 running in the same tank that has been a bit of a pain. I'm thinking of ditching it and building a second DIY filter powered by another Cobalt workhorse. It would certainly give me less trouble, be easier to clean, and not require purchasing replacement pre filters and carbon bags!
My "Excellent" means if I need more of this product I would buy from you.
