Product Description

Cobra 29LTD 40-Channel CB Radio

Amazon.com

The CB radio has been around since the 1930s. To see that the Citizens Band is still being produced and sold is testament to its reliability and usefulness. Cobra has brought back their version of the CB with this 29-LTD. They've made some nice improvements to the CB you might have used a decade or two ago. Key improvements to this radio include a front panel microphone connector which makes in-dash installation a cinch. Cobra has also provided a nine foot microphone cord so that you keep in touch from a good distance, whether you're located in a truck cab or dispatch office. The final noteworthy improvement are tactile controls for safer, and more accurate, functionality. Other features include: antenna warning indicator, SWR calibration, instant Channel 9, PA capability, dimmer control, switchable noise blanker and RF gain. In a time of seemingly un-ending technological advances, it's nice to see something we created back in the late 1930s is still alive and kicking.

What's in the Box
One 29-LTD CB radio, nine foot microphone cord, transceiver bracket, microphone bracket, DC power cord, a user's manual, and a two year limited warranty.

There are a lot of CB radios out there and the Cobra 29 LTD Classic has stood the test of time. It comes with the traditional chrome detailed brushed aluminum faceplate that really shows off this radio. But the true quality is in the radio itself. I have owned plenty of CBs in the past 30 years including some top-end AM/sideband CBs as well as a few export radios, and as far as a straight AM 40 channel CBs, this is one that really shines above the others. The most impressive features in this radio are its sensitivity in receiving, even while the Noise-Blanker and/or Automatic Noise Limmiter circuits are engaged. And these circuits actually eliminate static and engine-generated noise...unlike some other radios. Overall, the 29LTD Classic is perhaps the best inexpensive AM CB out there!

A great unit for those who live in "hands free" states to legally allow the use of your cell phone without taking your hands off the wheel.

The microphone for the CB radio also houses the Bluetooth microphone. You do not push the button to talk on your cell phone, but if the mike is not mounted near the driver's face, you may need to hold it in order to be heard.

While driving in a semi, it works well to cancel out the noise of the truck from the background.

In addition, the advantages over mobile Bluetooth devices is that you do not need to recharge this unit. If you spend a lot of time in a vehicle, this is a good product for you.

Do be careful with the microphone, however. It is not the standard 4-pin microphone used on virtually all CB radios today but instead has six pins. If the microphone is damaged beyond use or must be replaced, a special microphone with the Bluetooth technology is required to continue using the unit.

So far I have been very impressed by the unit, Transmission range and incoming messages will change from user to user due to different antenna set ups. The bluetooth function works well, I can hear the person I'm calling loud and clear through the CB speaker, however I have been told that I am hard to understand on the other end. You have to hold the mic about 2 inches away from your face to get good results.
The mounting screws that the unit come with are far smaller than the should be, the unit ripped its self out of my dash on my first long ride, I replaced the short screws it came with for a set of 1 inch screws when I got home, not a big deal but something to be aware of, you cant really go wrong using bigger screws.

I have a Cobra 29LTD BT radio in the truck and it is a wonderful way to be hands free while driving, you have the option to add an external mic and have it closer to you. it is easy with a press of a button on the mic to answer a call.

This CB has been considered one of the best for years, and rightfully so. When you get a strong signal, the speaker is loud at full and clear through the volume range. That, I did not expect.

The CB also calibrates well to your antenna. Originally I got bad SWR and reception, but I fixed the antenna and got 1:1.2 across all channels. Eventually I'll mount it differently than I do now for better reception.

Best Cobra 29 to date. Excellent blue tooth. Sounds better than my phone alone. Everyone thinks I'm calling from home, and don't hear all the back ground noise of my truck. I did have a shop turn down the lights for me since all my driving is at night and I keep the cb mounted to my right just above eye level (I've had other brands turned down as well so that is no major issue). I only wish they made the other Cobra models with bluetooth like the 148, or made a bluetooth add-on kit for other brands and greatly increase sales to the CB enthusiasts loyal to other CB brands. A+ Cobra!!

We initially purchased one of these and after seeing how well the Bluetooth function worked with the phone, immediately purchased 3 more. We replaced an old Cobra 25 with one of these. We eventually paired 2 of them with Firesticks and 1 of with a Cobra HG A2000 antenna. After properly tuning, the sound out of these is amazingly clear. For driving together they are much better sound quality than any of our cell phones. The built in SWR meter is very easy to use. By using the built in SWR meter we calibrated each unit to at worst a 1.2 SWR. They also look great too. The chome trim and nobs create a great accent to our dashes. I expect we'll be using these for a long time.

Much has been written about this old workhorse of a radio, so I won't repeat what has already been covered a-plenty. I am using this as a base for now and that may make my two issues more of an issue than when it is installed mobile.

1) The mic jack is right next to (on the left) the on/off/vol/squ knob and is so close that it is very hard to get a good grip on these most used knobs with your left hand as the mic cord and jack are in the way. Right hand is no problem. Installed in a rig it would almost always be above or to the right so most people would be using their right hand anyway.

2) The squelch circuit/function is very mushy. When a signal is very close to the squelch level (above or below) the audio will fade in and out instead off switching off and on. Tuning it is more like a volume control than a squelch. This means when it is just below the sq level you can still hear it faintly instead of it being chopped cleanly off. And when you have a good signal that is getting weaker it slowly fades off instead of switching off. Really a poorly designed circuit but it does work. Again if it were in a rig you probably wouldn't hear this fading as much due to the background noise.

Oh and the mic is a bulbous piece of plastic junk with a mushy key switch too. Worth upgrading if you use it a lot.

Otherwise this is a solid rig especially for the money.
