Cobra gets badmouthed often by the radar detector community, and for some good reasons. Their marketing is BS and the 'features' often get in the way of actual detecting unless you know what you're doing.

I used to have a Cobra about 6 years ago, and it kept me ticket free for 2 years until it got stolen. The SPX 5300 is reminiscent of that. Here in Lee's Summit, MO, there is a stretch of highway with some known radar sources that I tested it on. I also drive around the KC metro and surrounding areas for my work, so I got the chance to test it out in some real life scenarios.

CONS:

The extra features.
X band is in most places not necessary, so it takes up valuable scanning time and is the source of many false alarms. Thought X band detection isn't useless, most of us don't need it. For the same reasons, leave Ku off. Ku is used sometimes in Europe and Asia.

POP detection causes many many false alerts. Strangely, POP would consistently alert when near a camera. Here in Lee's Summit MO, the cameras aren't enforced, so I don't know if that is mere coincidence.

Laser detection is useless on every detector, so don't kid yourself. Throw Safety Alerts and the 15 band detection in the same category. This is all marketing BS.

Dim display:
In bright sunlight the display can be difficult to read.

Quiet speaker:
My old Cobra was noticeable when I had the music up. The SPX 5300 is just quiet enough that it's possible to miss an alert in loud conditions.

PROS:

Useful sensitivity:
After disabling the extra 'features,' the K and Ka sensitivity got better and the K false alarms went way down with Ka false alarms basically 0.

For the SPX 5500. First off i will say i have had this radar for roughly 2 1/2 years. This is the only radar I've ever had too. I got it at Best Buy, for $150 that was the total cost after tax. I got it cause i was 17 and a couple of my friends had one so i was like why the hell not. The radar has paid for itself x50 (literally a lifesaver at times). I live in a suburb, and this is great for highway and any types of roads. I'll give you some PROS and CONS of it. First off the PROS... It has good range and will definitely give you enough time to slow down before you pass a speed trap or a cop coming your way (unless your doing like 30mph over the limit and even sometimes you'll still have enough time to slow down). It also has a City/Highway setting, and you can manual switch this back and forth with a push of a button. There's not much difference between the two in my opinion, the City setting is suppose to cut out some of the false alerts, i can't really tell at times. It also picks cops up around turns, most of the time its gonna give you just enough time to slow down to the speed limit. I will say I've never been pulled over for speeding when I've had this radar. The suburb i live in, cops love to hide out and try and get you in a trap and my radar usually gives me plenty of time to slow down and pass the cop way under the speed limit (just to wave and be like not today mr officer). For highway use its great also never really had a close call on the highway, i usually go anywhere from 75-85 mph (in a 70 mph zone) on the highway and have never been worried about being pulled over. One other thing before i get to the CONS, not every cop has there radar on, 20% of the time i pass a cop and my radar doesn't go off, so don't freak out if you pass a cop and your radar doesn't go off.Read more ›

I don't know why people say laser is useless. If you're a quitter, then maybe laser is useless, but until I see the red and blue flashing lights I'm not giving up. I tested this thing. City or Highway it will spot X K or Ka BEFORE you get measured. Police say they don't use Ku or VG IV+, but I don't believe anything the cops say.

ABOUT THE ACUTAL DETECTOR:

First off, as always please remember that this is a radar detector, NOT a police detector. If police have their radar turned off, you will NOT detect them. The first day I had this I was driving around testing it out. It was very snowy out and several cars had slid off the interstate. I passed around 5 police vehicles and it didn't go off once. This is because the police were on scene at an accident so weren't monitoring speed. In addition, like all radar "detectors" this will produce many false signals. Certain radio electronics such as garage door openers will trigger an alert.

This cobra does quite well for its price. The range isn't amazing (sometimes I see the cop before the detector goes off) but it tends to do pretty well. Once I went by one of those automatic traffic speed measurement devices by the side of the road and the detector literally didn't go off until after I had passed it. Other times it detects cops well ahead of time and gives me plenty of time to slow down if need be.

DO NOT LEAVE OUT IN THE COLD. If you live up north, bring it inside during the winter and plug it back in once you're ready to drive. I left it out in my cold car for a night and it wouldn't turn back on until after about 20 minutes of driving. I now just leave it in my briefcase and plug it in whenever I drive.

There are two basic "modes" in this device; city and highway. City is a little less sensitive but tends to produce fewer false signals. Highway is more sensitive but is quite sensitive to false signals. I usually leave it on highway because I find that it's better to be super sensitive and slow down for false signals than risk not picking a valid signal up. Also with highway on you will "detect" the officer earlier (on average).
