Somehow I forgot to write a review for this thing last year (though I remembered to upload the photo!).

I tried a few Coby radios at the time, including this one, and none were very good. Weak reception and sound. As the other reviewer noted, reception is bad enough to make several stations virtually non-existent.

If you actually want to listen to radio, pay more for a Sangean or Sony.

Compared to this Coby:

1. The Sangean SR-3 is like a much higher-quality version of the Coby, but for a much higher price.

2. The Sony ICF-S10MK2 offers similar quality advantages without being more expensive, but it is much larger.

3. A variety of small headphone-only Sony radios are also available for reasonable prices.

I gave the coby 2 stars because the price is low enough to make it a novel pocket-size toy. I don't know of any other speaker-bearing radio this small for this price. But if you want anything more than novelty value, this is a bad choice.

The picture is not the product I received. It is the ole bait and switch. The one received is a Coby CX-83 - but it is all cheap manual dial - not the nice LCD display in the picture. Very very disappointing.

This little portable AM/FM radio is hard to beat for the price. In addition to the usual earphone jack, it has an external speaker, not easy to find, particularly in a small pocket radio. (I don't like earphones; they're inconvenient and ruin your hearing.) The speaker puts out a good deal of monophonic sound for the size of the radio, controlled by a little volume wheel, which runs on two AAA batteries.

What is really nice is that the radio comes with two carry straps that easily click into slots in the body. There is the usual pocket clip, but also a neck strap that you can choose. I use the neck strap, as while I am working in the yard, a pocket clip won't hold the radio in your pocket when you bend over.

My only complaint is that on AM stations, even powerful ones, the volume varies as you move around. Apparently, the internal antenna is highly oriented. Also, it is pretty difficult to see the kilohertz and megahertz markings to find stations accurately on the little tuning wheel. However, if you just want to leave the radio primarily on one station, that isn't a significant problem. For $5.00, it's hard to complain!

well I gave it only a three rating as I bought three of them for my three grandson's so I really don't know how well they work. according to my son everything that was bought works fine. my grandson's are eight and under so I didn't want to buy something expensive as you know how rough boy's can be! they got them for Christmas and was something they actually never had, so they were pretty happy about them. I would recommend these for the younger kids as if they were misused and quit working you aren't out a lot of money.

When you have it on full volume you can barely hear sound. If you want to enjoy the music or other programing you really have to use the ear buds to understand what is being said. It doesn't pull many of the local stations in this area in either.

first off I didn't expect a lot from a less than five dollar radio. I wanted a small radio with which to listen to online radio stations, via a very high quality CCrane fm transmitter. any brand should have accomplished this easily as the signal from the transmitter can be heard 3 houses down loud and clear. This radio however had static only one room away! Only 2 or 3 fm broadcast stations came in strong enough to be completely static free. and am was almost useless only receiving the two local stations less than 15 miles away! the radio looks good, is small and if you can get a signal the built in speakers were clear. included was a neck strap which would have been handy, and a belt clip along with a pair of very cheap earbud headphones. Coby may have poor quality control and some may work marginally better, but i would gamble even the few dollars this radio cost to try to get one.

I have this in silver and it gets terrible reception. I can only get 1 local station in sort of clearly and even then, there's still significant static. Most of the time the signal fades in and out, so I just don't use it. It also runs through batteries very quickly.
