it seems to function excellently - just like my old coby did.
two things of note, if you read previous reviews [or look on the net] for "how-to" info on making this multi-region... well, this one came "all-region" straight out of the box.
and, as was mentioned in other previous reviews about changing the region status of this machine - that ability is not listed in the menu of this one. at least not as far as i could find.
but it wasn't necessary as this plays my region 2, 4, and 5 discs, as well as my region 1 discs.
my assumption is that coby just decided to quit wasting everyone's time [as well as their own] and ship the same player all over the world and not worry about the regions.
so far, it's a great upconverting multi-region ntsc/pal player. lots of adjustability with this. it just played a kickass avi that i downloaded off the net.
This COBY has the HDMI output along with it's analog and composite outputs. So the first movie I put in looked a LOT better on the new TV.
The only problem I've had is deciphering the meanings of the options in the setup menus. I'm not savvy enough to know what all the options actually do, and the manual doesn't explain anything, just has screen shots of the menus. The saving grace there is that the player leaves the picture on the screen while you change things, so you get instant feedback on every change. Also, the remote buttons and menu layouts make it easy to try a bunch of different options quickly.
This was a great surprise, since this was the CHEAPEST player I could find, and it gave me exactly what I wanted: Great picture and easy use.
I am very patient. I spent a few days trying to run my PAL DVDs on my TV (which accepts all regions, format and resolution). I tried everything but just did not work. Perfect for NTSC.
Cheap and flimsy material. The door of the DVD tray did not close once the DVD was inserted. I had to keep the door open with my finger to make sure the DVD could be inserted properly..
And because of the third party return policy it isn't worth having it replaced, due to the nature of the defect. Not worth paying that shipping, not worth the time spent, not worth the original purchase.
I am VERY disappointed with this purchase, and I will not buy from this manufacturer again, guaranteed.
Don't waste your money on this piece of junk.
