Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 in Moravia; between the ages of four and eighty-two his home was in Vienna: in 1938 Hitler's invasion of Austria forced him to seek asylum in London, where he died in the following year.

His career began with several years of brilliant work on the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. He was almost thirty when, after a period of study under Charcot in Paris, his interests first turned to psychology, and another ten years of clinical work in Vienna (at first in collaboration with Breuer, an older colleague) saw the birth of his creation, psychoanalysis. This began simply as a method of treating neurotic patients by investigating their minds, but it quickly grew into an accumulation of knowledge about the workings of the mind in general, whether sick or healthy. Freud was thus able to demonstrate the normal development of the sexual instinct in childhood and, largely on the basis of an examination of dreams, arrived at his fundamental discovery of the unconscious forces that influence our everyday thoughts and actions.

Freud's life was uneventful, but his ideas have shaped not only many specialist disciplines, but the whole intellectual climate of the last half-century.

The description did not reflect the actual state of the book. The hardcover is almost completely falling off the book.

The book arrived quicker than I expected it to and was in better shape than I expected of a 50-year-old book. There was creasing along the bound edge of the cover but clearly, the only page previously turned was that cover. It seems like no one ever looked past the first page. I am worried that when I read it, the pages will fall out because the glue is 50 years old, but I do tend to catastrophize. Overall, I am very pleased with this order and won't hesitate to order from this seller again.

Freud thought that cocaine was a miracle drug that would cure neurotics of their ailments. Unfortunately, this does not appear to be the case.

I was a psychology major in college but never talked about Freud's use & work with cocaine in any of my classes, so I am extremely interested in this book & what it has to say. My only complaint is that they said it was in very good condition whereas when I opened it today I would say it is in good condition, not very good..Anyhow, it was printed in 1974 & has been through many hands no-doubt so I'm still quite pleased to own it now, however I'm not quite sure I would have paid as high a price as I did knowing the quality I actually received.
