Editorial Reviews

Tom Cruise is electrifying as Brian Flanagan, a young, confident, and ambitious bartender who, with the help of a seasoned pro (Bryan Brown -- GORILLAS IN THE MIST, F/X 2), becomes the toast of Manhattan's Upper East Side. But when he moves to Jamaica and meets an independent artist (Elisabeth Shue -- ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING, HOLLOW MAN), their vivid romance brings a new perspective to the self-centered bartender's life. Sizzling with high-powered performances and a #1 hit soundtrack, the box office blockbuster COCKTAIL has it all!

For those people who gave this film poor ratings, I think they're missing the point. It's supposed to be a fun film over all. It's not supposed to be serious acting with a heavy plot. Sometimes it's nice to watch a film where you don't have to think... you just sit down and enjoy. I personally enjoy films that 'take me someplace,' either physically or emotionally. This one takes you on a bit of a roller coast ride with Tom Cruise's character. While on that ride, you get to travel around to hip bars and tropical islands. There are a few emotional bumps in his path, but all turns out well with a nice happy ending. No, the film is not rocket science, nor is it supposed to be. It won't win an Oscar either, but if you're looking for an enjoyable movie where you can just sit down, relax, and have a good time, this might be a good selection for you.

This movie was very entertaining in all ways! I actually learned a lot from this movie as a bartender! Tom Cruise and Bryan Brown worked extremely well together. Get this movie if you want to laugh, feel sad, and then feel good again.

In the summer 1988, "Cocktail" would go on to become a magnificent success for Touchstone Pictures and also its musical soundtrack featuring The Beach Boys' "Kokomo", Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy", Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" and The Georgia Satellites' "Hippy Hippy Shake" would dominate the music charts that year.

Budgeted at $11 million, despite the criticism the film received from critics, "Cocktail" would go on to make over $171 million. The film would continue to show that Tom Cruise was Hollywood's golden child and that every film he would star in, would literally become a box office success.

And now, nearly 25 years later, "Cocktail" has made its debut on Blu-ray courtesy of Touchstone Home Entertainment.

VIDEO:

"Cocktail" is presented in 1080p High Definition (1:85:1). One of the benefits of "Cocktail" is the fact that it has one of the most talented, award-winning cinematographer's in Hollywood working on the film. Dean Semler is known for his work on film such as "Dances with Wolves", "2012″, "Secretariat", "Last Action Hero", to name a few. But what he brings to "Cocktail" is a darker feel when showcasing New York City and vibrancy when the location shifts to Jamaica.

While the film is a late '80s film, the good news is that there is no heavy DNR, so the film does maintain ts grain and detail. In fact, the Blu-ray is very good upgrade from its DVD counterpart. While watching the film, I didn't notice any artifacts nor did I see any banding. Skin tones were natural, black levels were nice and deep and "Cocktail" looks great on Blu-ray!

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

"Cocktail" is presented in English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, French and Spanish 2.0 Dolby Digital.

The "Cocktail" blu-ray has an outstanding, pretty HD picture, with very accurate colors (as with the flesh tones, for example), vivid colors, and it's very sharp . . . yet it's a 1988 film! The audio is solid. This is a couple of cuts above the DVD version. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Great job on this good film's Blu-Ray picture, it was clearly remastered with care. A+.

The story is terrific, it is more real-life and more interesting than some other reviewers have said. Yes, it's a vehicle for Tom Cruise to flash his smile all day, but the real star here, to me, is Bryan Brown as his teacher/boss/sidekick in bar-tending, and in friendship. A more attractive and better-acting female lead than Elizabeth Shue would have been nice, but it's an appealing romance story, a realistic one, even an everyday one, and more than aptly and professionally done. Locations include both NYC and a tropical island, with attractive photography in both places.

Cocktail is a good but not great movie. You might even call it a bad movie, but it is thoroughly enjoyable, kind of a Flashdance or Showgirls, but with drinks instead of dancing. It is a classic Horatio Alger tale, a rags-to-riches, work hard and you'll achieve the American Dream kind of fable. There is the obligatory scene where a teacher, bitter about failure in the real world, takes it out on his students. There is the mentor who helps him achieve the American Dream. And there is the boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, and boy gets her back aspect. There is also the part where he makes a bargain with the devil, a rich older woman, but after being thoroughly humiliated, he tries to salvage what remains of his dignity and self respect. It has all this, plus Cruise plays a very entertaining bartender who juggles the cocktail shakers. The tag line is: When he pours, he reigns. What's not to like?

Doug: Coughlin's Law: anything else is always something better.
================================

Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) has just gotten out of the military. His uncle Pat owns a bar, but he never ever under any circumstances, will give out drinks on the house. Though he could work there, Brian feels he was meant for better things. He goes to the big city looking for a start in some fruitful career but is turned down everywhere. Finally he stops at a bar where he meets his future mentor, Doug Coughlin (Bryan Brown). Coughlin sees himself as a philosopher, citing Coughlin's Laws that he has written over the years, distilling his experiences as a bartender into a potent brew.
