I did actually purchase the book because it was 400 pages and it's nice to have a decent length book to read but it was a bit unnecessary in this case.
The secondary characters really added to the story. Lots of humor. Still worth reading.
Jena is a type A personality, that loves her job as a physical therapist, the order she has in her life, and doesn't like to lose. When she reconnects with Nicholas, it scares her to death because the order & reason that she values most in her life just flies out the window. The feelings that she has for Nicholas are so intense that she worries about losing herself in him and is afraid to trust completely in what they have together. Nicholas is closed off from his feelings because of his upbringing and Jena is bull-headed because her need to control everything that they almost let their love implode because of misunderstandings and miscommunications. In the end, they both come to an understanding that they love each other enough to recognize their shortcomings and want to change so that they can be with and not hurt each other. I LOVED the story, however, I wish there had been a little more insight into their happily ever after.
The confusion, angst and hurdles along the way were realistically managed to the point where you want to bang their heads together and hope they see sense. That's when I reminded myself of their age, compared it with my own behaviour back then and think "Oh, wait ..." Yup. The author really nailed it.
The dialogue was of a quality that I just wanted to sink into and enjoy for ages. The sassy back and forth and heartfelt declarations sounded so REAL that it just endeared the characters to me all the more. When characters talk to me like that I can forget that I'm reading a construct, and that's when I start to relate to them as genuine people. To me, that's a sign of quality writing right there.
This is a contemporary romance that tells it like it is, drama without slipping into melodrama, and laughter and lust along the way. I absolutely loved it.
