Seems like a great set but in reality this is barely functional.I purchase young coconuts in bulk at my local asian market. I was on the search for something that would make opening these things more efficient and easier.When I came across this set I was beyond ecstatic❣️I keep my coconuts in the fridge to maintain shelf life - so when I first used the set, I used a cold coconut. I thought that perhaps the fiber was frozen…so I let it sit out for 24hr and tired again…but NOPE❣️ Even w/ the Thor hammer - I couldn’t open this thing‼️It’s unfortunate b/c I really wanted this to workI’m open for any suggestions if you got them

Please note: these tools are for opening GREEN (i.e. immature) coconuts that are best for coconut water, not the brown hard-shelled ones you find mostly in grocery stores on the mainland that have a lot more meat in them (and what little water remains isn't nearly as tasty as the green ones). Brown coconuts will just laugh at you until you crack them open using the back side of a big knife or machete, neither of which are included in this kit.

Also, don't buy into the "One-Strike Coconut Opening" claim as mentioned on the product page. The "coco jack" (in quotes because Coco Jack is actually patented, although there are a plethora of knock-offs and the patent owner is apparently now out of business) is intended to be driven into the top of the green coconut with a series of taps from a mallet -- if you try to do it in one blow, you're likely to make a mess or break something.

That said, this set is a comprehensive collection of the most popular gadgets for preparing young coconuts for drinking. If you want to scoop out the meat, there's often not much inside young coconuts, and it's a lot softer, sometimes almost like jelly.

I prefer the coring tool for making a quick hole in the coconut to insert a straw; the punching knife works better if you're trying to pour coconut water out of the coconut because it makes a larger hole. The "coco jack" gives better access to the meat.

For the price (~$22 USD at this writing) this is a pretty good deal. You're not getting top quality tools, but they work just fine.

I live on an island where coconuts are readily available however getting coconut water, coconut milk and coconut meat is very expensive. This coconut kit is all inclusive. It comes with a mallet with me opening the coconut easy I was able to extract the The water with no problem and even has a scraper to take out the meat. The tools are well designed it's not something that I would use in a commercial setting but for my two coconuts a week this is cut down the cost of buying it from the local tourist vendors. My niece really likes coconut water so I'm showing her how to use it so she can do it on her own. At 21.99 it's the cost of a coconut so it's going to save me a lot of money in the long run. The little carry bag make sure that keeps everything together and I have the two metal straws to save on destroy the environment with plastic.

This coconut opener is great and amazing. Where has it been all our life? We’ve eaten coconuts throughout the years and it’s always very difficult to break and crack it open and now we have a great tool kit that will help us open it and we’ll be able to enjoy eating the coconut easier and faster. When we opened coconuts over the years, it took so much of our energy and time to crack it open and it was very frustrating and exhausting, but now, we can enjoy a better more pleasant experience and we can conserve our strength and energy. It’s a wonderful idea and we look forward to using the coconut opener so we can enjoy eating a coconut very soon.

This is actually 3 openers, not just one. But I have not yet tried them all, so I will update if there is anything to add.

This is used AFTER breaking off the outer shell (if you are gathering from the tree) and then still whacking off some of the thick outer protective casing: Notice that the photos show trimmed tops. In tropical areas where coconuts grow, you can watch people use machetes to do this, while holding the coconut in the other hand (yikes!). At roadside stands with a fresh new coconut, they will simply whack around the top slicing off the top in triangular slices, perhaps 4 or 5 whacks, and then they will often just then slice off the top point, leaving a bowl of beautiful water.

I really don't want to use a machete, and I usually just avoid buying coconuts in the store because even getting the tip off of a triangular-sliced-trimmed coconut is challenging.

The tools come with a nice bag but NO instructions. You are left to come back to the listing to see again how to use the tools. Definitely a star off for that. They should just place a photocopy of the photographs of how to use it, with the tool set.

I willl update this listing in time, because I am also curious how long this set will last until too dull to work.
I am writing the original review in August 2024.
