This is a marvelously written story of two men who decide to purchase a home in Vieques as a get-away place, but go thorough the problems accompanying any renovation. They want to rent to other people to pay for their few weeks on the island every year. The island individuals described are people you have no problem visualizing, as Youngblood is so descriptive. All of them are right there in your head, including someone they hired to manage the beginning renovations and winds up firing THEM...you just have to read it to understand what makes this so funny. The next door neighbor is something out of a situation comedy, their new property manager, Jane, could easily have her own tv show, and the description of the stores, both on Vieques and other islands is so spot on, you feel like you were there. I actually looked up their website and was amazed that the photos of the house are just what I imagined from reading the book. (And Patrick, I see you still have those orange walls...keep them...it makes for a great story!) I very rarely give 5 stars, because, you know the drill, it's always better to have something to strive for. This however, rates right up there at about 4-3/4. Amusing, fun, decorating tips, good writing, Martini's, and the often frustrating tales of renovating any older home; it's all there. And what a delight to read about it! Maybe someday I can schedule a vacation at Casa Dos Chivos...I think it would be absolutely marvelous!
NOTE: For those of us who believe in correct spelling and grammar, this book is a tour de force.
Patrick Youngblood's writing is excellent. He writes with humor and doesn't mind laughing at himself. I enjoyed their adventures buyng their property and refurbishing it. I could feel their frustration with trying to manage a project from far away and am happy they found a trustworthy and hard working property manager.
I have read many books written by people who buy homes in far away places. This is one of the best!

The story of finding the house and then the renovating of it is wonderful!!!
Well done on the brilliantly written book Patrick Youngblood!
Is there to be a sequel to this I wonder???
An honest, readable, most enjoyable book that will stay with me for some time.
I felt that I could just picture him & his partner in so many of the scenes while reading this book. The characters are well written & portrayed in such a way that you feel you know them (or don't want to know them in some cases!) The house is the star though of course, & sounds totally wonderful. Lets have a follow up soon please - am dying to hear how the pool goes!
