WARNING:
From the manufacturer
Command a star-spangled strike team against an alien threat
Command a strike team of unexpected heroes - assembled by Abraham Lincoln himself - to defend Earth against an alien invasion. Harness the power of steam to scout, surprise, and annihilate enemies in this star-spangled blend of turn-based strategy and action gameplay. Only you can outwit and outgun this otherworldly threat. Take ‘em out, agents.
From the creators of the critically-acclaimed Fire Emblem and Advance Wars series comes a new take on tactical strategy. Battle through globe-spanning, alien-infested battlefields using a customizable four-member team comprised of diverse characters including folk-hero John Henry, adventurous Tom Sawyer and, the lion from Oz? Each character has a unique weapon and ability, so you’ll have to strategically manage their steam gauges as you take cover, set up ambushes, and unleash powerful counter-attacks. It’s up to you to decide the best way to use your available steam power to perform heroic actions. It’s Lincoln versus aliens and I wouldn’t want to be the aliens.

Now for the gameplay the game really makes you think & plan ahead truthfully. Reason being the game is a third person tactical shooter. You are only allowed to move a few steps, attack a limited amount of time & etc. Everything is done in third person. I would say what makes the game hard is that one mistake could cost you the whole level. You really have to think about how you move & attack.
The setting is well a steampunk planet earth & Abraham Lincoln is president of the united states. (which I will throw this out here that steam punk Abraham Lincoln is epic (well in my opinion). You work under Abraham Lincoln to pretty much save the world from an alien invasion.
The game is created by Nintendo & Intelligent Systems (they have worked on numerous games with Nintendo & especially the fire emblem games). If you have the fire emblem amiibo's of Robin, Marth, Ike, & Lucina. You can get these characters added to the party roster.
I would have to say what makes the game unique the the steampunk setting & the gameplay. I have never played a third person tactical shooter before but the gameplay is fun despite being challenging.
In my opinion this game is pretty much extremely underrated & highly recommend it if you are into tactical games where every decision/move counts.

The game is a turn-based 3rd person shooter/strategy. You aim and fire manually for your characters, which is much easier if you have a *new* 3ds with the second thumbstick or a circle pad pro. If not, you use the touchscreen or (try to) use the a/b/x/y buttons to move the camera. Once your turn is over, the enemy has their turn. It takes awhile and you are restricted to what your characters can see (no map) so it can feel like you're just waiting. There is an update available that speeds it up and it makes the game flow a bit better. It's a challenging game, much like it's cousin Fire Emblem, sometimes you're one bad call away from losing. Mentioning F.E.: if you're lucky enough to own the Marth, Ike, Robin, or Lucina amiibos they unlock that character in the game.
I think it's worth saying that the characters and story are absurd and there will probably never be another game story like this again. President Lincoln runs an organization consisting of famous literary characters who use steam-punk technology to fight an invasion of Cthulhu aliens (all of which is depicted in a comic-book art style). The story won't win any awards, but it frames the action perfectly.
The game has flaws but if you like strategy games Codename STEAM is a steal at it's current price of $16.
While I was considering this game I wish someone could have described the style of the game to me, so let me do it for you. The game's mechanics are somewhat similar XCOM. Movement and shooting come from the same gauge, so you can take some steps then fire your weapon. This game does allow you to undo certain things, like if you run too far you can back up and refill your movement/gun gauge. But if you move then shoot, you cannot step backwards to refill your gauge. Instead of being able to see a large field of view like in XCOM, you are limited to the eyesight of your soldiers, thus losing the advantage of seeing a lot of the map and adding some challenge.
The only problem I have was not even with the game. There was a mishap when this was shipped; somewhere along its journey the packaging got very damaged and couldn't be scanned. The mail-person had to take the package back to the post office once I took the game out so she had proof she delivered it! The game itself and its box were fine but the package had black streaks as if it was partially run over or something! Maybe this isn't worth noting since the game was fine, but I wanted to include everything in this review.

If you find it in any kind of medium-low single digit price get it without a second thought. Obviously dont expect Fire emblem or bravely default production quality.
I would wait until my child is 10 before letting them play, but no need to wait until they are 12 years old. Its just PEGI ratings going from 7+ straight to 12+
Made by the excellent people from Intelligent systems (Paper Mario, Fire emblem and Advance wars).
It is great to see a new game and hopefully a new franchise! Starts off easy enough to break you in and familiarize you with the turn based combat, but soon steps up the challenge, and each level brings new characters with new abilities. An original designed game. Only one or two of the characters are grating, but most are very likable with unique weapons that are great to try out in the next fight. This game provided a great challenge and was addictive all the way through. Gave me around 35 hours of play, and is very repayable too. Would highly recommend as a top quality, addictive, original game!
Reviews were mixed when this was released, that was because enemy turn times took so long to complete and frustrated many reviewers. It's been patched now though and before you play this game it will ask you to download it. Since the patch some reviewers updated their score and gave it a positive. Excellent game.
