Some years back I got The XX on a recommendation from Amazon. It quickly became one of my favorite albums, to the extent of putting it on random and listening to the 12 songs in loop for 7 hours straight. When I heard they were splitting up due to personal differences, I was heartbroken. When I saw the pre-order for the NEW ALBUM (!!) Coexist, I did squee with delight.

Coexist did not disappoint.

When I first listened, I was dismayed at what could have been an inferior product. I realized quickly, though, that it was just a matter of not being as familiar with the new songs as I was with the old favorites. And I was right. In less than a week, I was appreciating the poignancy of Angels, the insistence of Fiction or the sweetness of Tides. I have a playlist of the first 2 albums and can happily listen to them all day.

Coexist is much more produced than XX was. It lost some of the raw emotional impact of the first album in the slickness. Also, the conversational back and forth of the two lead singers is not as prevalent in Coexist, but when they do, the chemistry is still there. Closing with Our Song, the story of the turmoil of Coexist is brought full circle, where the two singers return to a state of, well, coexistence.

The three best words I can use to describe this album. Each song is unique enough to stand on its own, yet complement each other nicely. The lyrics may bring you down a bit, but I'd be lying if I said this type of music has any other purpose.

It feels very raw, poetic, and real which is rare in these over-produced album days we find ourselves in.

I wouldn't say it's a perfect album, as after a few listens the repetition got to be a bit much (I think their first album stood up slightly better to repetition), but still a very high quality album.

I would recommend this album to anyone who loved their first album, as it is exactly the same style, and will be telling all my friends and family to check it out (which is rare for me to do).

I just picked up their first CD a couple of months ago. I read an amazing review in Rolling Stone, so I listened to the song samples and had to get it. I've listened to the CD (previous album) a few times now, and it's great, really great. It's perfect background music, and sounds amazing in headphones. So, of course I had to pick up Coexist. The best thing I can say about the new album is it's "more of the same". 11 more songs that sounds like part 2 of the debut album. They kept what works, what makes the first one so good, the calm lyrics and hushed tones, the easy, brooding music, and made more of it. If you like the first album, you'll like Coexist just as much. And vice/versa, if this is your first time hearing XX.

I will admit the music is excellent! I love it, there are people that say that The XX's 2nd album sucks but I love it, the only problem with the vinyl I got is that it got to much surface noise, I can hear the songs clearly but the surface noise is kind of loud plus I bought it from Wiremill Products, I should of bought it from Amazon instead.... Anyways get it from Amazon, ever since I started buying vinyls straight from "Amazon.com LLC" I never had 1 bad vinyl!

In my purchase of XX's records, I didn't have any remorse and I bought three at the same time, "coexist" really does the trick, you can listen in this record how they sincronize each other, as if they were seeing each other and talking telepathically all the time as to predict the other one's moves and thoughts! and also you can dance and have good time with friends with this record.

The first album was honestly too minimal for me to enjoy for repeated listens. I need drums at least on half the album, and I didn't get that the first go round. Coexist takes the momentum Jamie xx gathered on all the remixes and side-projects he had a hand in between albums and made a solid though slow at times album. The melodies are way more catchier than on their debut, while the productions seem more polished (I would say, finished, even) making this album satisfying after the first listen. Because of the minimalist approach of their songs, which a lot seem like they could have been freestyled, its hard to hear a song that represents the sound of the album. The first two tracks represent most of what the album presents and there aren't many surprises from there.

The most gratifying surprise comes on the song "Reunion" which starts in standard fair but slowly breaks down into something reminiscent of 90's house and is my favorite track on the album. I also enjoyed the gratuitous amount of bass slathered on this album. It was the kind that made Jamie's version of Gil Scott-Heron's I'm New Here very enjoyable that I enjoyed hearing on this release.

I gave this a 3 even though I really liked it because it made me want a electronic/house styled album from The xx instead of what was given. I can respect leaving the listener wanting more but not wanting something else. I am a big fan of Jamie's work and this is a great follow up that makes me anticipate what they do next even more.

An amazing followup to The Xx, Coexist invokes a subtle meditation. I listened to the pre-release stream while working to familiarize myself with the songs, and although I left it at a background volume level, I found the hooks getting stuck in my head (in a good way, not an obnoxious Top 40 way.) It's hypnotic to say the least, I'm not sure what people were hoping for in a second album, but this is exactly what I wanted.

I can't read a review without wanting to put my headphone on and zone out for a little while. Great for long drives, work music, background music during dinner, impromptu late light listening parties, and any other time you want to de-stress.

Mellow melancholy chilled follow up a quiet triumph

The XX had a stunning debut album released when they were still in their teens which saw them emerge with a unique sound fully formed apparently out of nowhere. That album was critically acclaimed , won the Mecury Music Prize, and was a commercial success subsequently selling over a million. The new follow up is in the same mould, but it is better produced, and vocals are now more to the fore. The characteristic sound is subtle beats and synthesisers, woven though with a slinky bass, and shimmery spiderlike guitar. The arrangements are gentle and enchanting, subtley growing on you. The mood is generally downbeat, lyrics highlight fears of relationships falling apart. Romy Madley Croft's vocals remind me at times of Tracy Thorn's vocal style , they are clear, chilled, gorgeously executed, spine tingling, right from the stunning opener Angels. Second track Chained has a lovely duet with Oliver Sim, while track 3 ,Fiction has just Oliver singing. In general my favourite tracks are the slightly off kilter duets featuring both Romy and Oliver beautifully complementing each other. The third band member Jamie Smith is a production whizz kid, in demand by others, who is responsible for their blissed out subtle music, leaving plenty of space in the arrangements. Try is another duet track, while Reunion stands out as being a bit different with subtle organic steel pans taking the place of the usual synthesiser. Most of the tracks are only just over 3 minutes, and the album glides by, creating a lovely ambience . I am sure this will be another big hit and a strong contender for album of the year . Such brilliance from a trio of 23 year olds , who go on from strength to strength, great stuff.

Ähnlich wird es den dreien gehen, jetzt, da sie den Nachfolger zum genialen Debüt draußen haben, jetzt, da die Arbeit gemacht und der Kampf gekämpft ist, da sich die ins Übermächtige gesteigerten Erwartungen nunmehr am fertigen Produkt messen können, Antworten erwartet werden auf die Fragen: Bleibt es spannend? Bleibt es gut? Wird es vielleicht sogar besser?

Bevor hier ein lautes, ein dreifaches ‘Ja!’ geschmettert werden soll, darf kurz noch darüber räsoniert werden, wann sich eigentlich eine Plattenfirma dafür entscheidet, vor dem Veröffentlichungstermin mit dem kostenlosen Stream ins Netz zu gehen. Dann, wenn man mehr Personal als die normale Promo dazu einsetzen muss, um die Leaks, die Löcher zu stopfen (dass ein Netz naturgemäß nur aus Löchern besteht, kann da wohl kaum beruhigen)? Dann, wenn man befürchten muß, die Anzahl der illegalen Downloads könnte die der legalen Einkäufe übertreffen? Das Tamtam jedenfalls, was um die zweite Platte der recht bald zum Trio geschrumpften Londoner Band veranstaltet wurde, war fraglos aberwitzig, gemessen am Echo ihres Erstlings aber vielleicht auch verständlich – Top Of All Lists, Mercury Prize, die Branche braucht dringend Hoffnungsträger und The XX werden sie, das lässt sich jetzt sagen, nicht enttäuschen.

Dabei sind die Veränderungen, die sie ihrem Sound verpaßt haben, gar nicht so riesig, wie von vielen behauptet – gottlob bleibt die geheimnisvolle, sinistre Grundstimmung der Stücke unangetastet, der intime Wechselgesang zwischen Romy Madley Croft und Oliver Sim ebenso, einzig Jamie Smith darf das gewohnte Gefüge aufbrechen und gibt den neuen Stücken in kluger Dosierung zur Beschleunigung die passenden Beats hinzu – das ist es. Und das reicht, um den Gesamteindruck auf höchstem Niveau zu halten. Der blecherne Trommelwirbel zur dumpfen Bassdrum (“Angels”) nur ein Anfang, das Ticken über dunklem Grollen bei “Chained”, dazu die jubilierenden Gitarren, spätestens bei “Fiction” hat man alle Vorbehalte und jedwedes Misstrauen beiseite gelegt und sich dem Zauber ergeben.

Wie schon beim Vorgänger greift auch bei “Coexist” maßgenau ein Track in den nächsten, auf das taumelnde, behutsam geloopte “Try” folgen die straffen Hooks von “Reunion” und der feine Beat bei “Sunset”, immer wieder von Pausen unterbrochen, von schillernden Chords ergänzt. “Missing” ist ein ganz großer Wurf, den so zu früheren Zeiten vielleicht nur Adrian Thaws aka. Tricky hinbekommen hätte, dieses schleppende Wummern, begleitet von Sims abgrundtiefem Timbre: “My heart is beating in a diffrenet way, been gone such a long way“ – phänomenal, word.

Ebenso groß und einzigartig: „Unfold“ – die Nackenhaare aufgestellt, lauscht man mit Schaudern „Oh, let it unfold, I won't leave it untold, the feeling goes on and on and on…”. “Swept Away” danach ist vielleicht das Stück, was die Hinwendung der drei zu – ansatzweise – tanzbarem Sound am konsequentesten verkörpert, bevor dann “Our Song” den akkustischen Abschied markiert: “Like you do, what I've done you've done too, the walls I hide behind, you walk through…”. Keine Ahnung, welches der vielen Etiketten, die nun das lichte Cover des Albums zieren werden – ob “Klangkunst” oder “Geniestreich” – das treffendste ist, fest steht: Es gibt keinen Grund, mit Lob zu geizen, gerade weil die Fallhöhe für The XX eine beträchtliche war. 音楽を聴くのが大好きでFM雑誌をチェックしてはテープに録音。
狙ってた曲がかかる番組の時間になると、パーソナリティの進行を聞きながらワクワクドキドキしながらラジカセの録音ボタン(と再生ボタン)に指をかけていた十代。

社会に出て荒波や人波に揉まれ、やがて「テープの時代」も終わり気付けば音楽から完全に離れてました。

3年程前あるエレクトロユニットをきっかけに錆びていた音楽熱が復活、新たなCDプレーヤーを買い、思い切ってゼンハイザーのHD700等も購入。

そして長い空白期間に活躍した幾多の素晴らしいアーティストをネット等で知る内、ここに辿り着きました。

数々の素晴らしい音楽の中でも特に凄いなと思ったのはジェームスブレイク、フライングロータス等です。独特の音作り、病的なまでの緻密な音の配置。ロータス等は正に音の洪水に放り込まれる快感だったりしますが、このエックスエックスは全く別次元で凄いです。

自分はダウナーな孤高の芸術家肌の様な音楽が好きみたいなんですが、その音数の少なさや終始一定したダウナーなテンション、それを保ちながら一度も揚げずに曲は終わる構成。
なのにすんごく心地よい。

行間だらけだが、究極に少ない本数の柱のみで永久に建ち続けるアートな建造物を見る様な…。

恐らく、数少ない一生聴き続ける音楽かも。

深い夜に身を預けていたくなる様な素晴らしい音楽です。

Das ist ganz klar Musik, die wie für mich gemacht ist. Lange hat es nicht gedauert, dass sich mir der Zauber dieses anfangs eintönig erscheinenden Liedguts erschlossen hat.

Selten höre ich eine weibliche und eine männliche Stimme im harmonischen Zwiegesang, aber bei The XX schmiegen sich die sanften, stets etwas zaghaften Vocals von Romy Madley Croft und Oliver Sim sanft aneinander. Seine ganze Wirkung entfaltet der Gesang aber erst durch die minimalistischen Klangbilder, die Jamie Smith, der mich mit seinem aktuellen Soloalbum noch nicht zu überzeugen vermag, hier zaubert. Niemals drängt sich ein Beat in den Vordergrund, was hier durch und durch positiv auffällt.

Was oft als Schwachpunkt betrachtet zu werden scheint, ist für mich ein großer Pluspunkt: The XX schaffen auf "Coexist" einen ganz eigenen Vibe, ein vages Feeling, das sich durch das ganze Album zieht, sodass die Platte wie ein gigantischer Song wirkt. Tatsächlich hatte ich am Anfang Schwierigkeiten, manche der Songs auseinanderzuhalten - gerade "Reunion" fließt unbemerkt in "Sunset" über -, aber das legt sich mit der Zeit. Der erwähnte Vibe bleibt jedoch bestehen und sorgt für das wohlige Grundgefühl, das "Coexist" in mir auslöst. Und doch blitzen auch immer wieder individuale Höhepunkte einzelner Songs heraus: etwas das Düstere in "Missing", der herrlich eingängige, zeitlose Beat in "Tides", die Zerbrechlichkeit von "Angels", der plötzlich einsetzende Beat in "Reunion", die genialen Beats in "Chained", die mich förmlich in den Himmel tragen, und, und, und ...

"Coexist" ist ein Album, das diese Bezeichnung auch wirklich verdient hat: Keine lose Liedersammlung liegt hier vor, sondern ein kompaktes, homogenes, schlicht wunderschönes Ganzes.
