Editorial Reviews

"This was a very entertaining story. It was an enjoyable Saturday read. It had very enticing characters and made the trilogy (so far) continue to flow on. God job Mr. Whittle. You held my attention!" -Maureen

From the Inside Flap

"Don't you think that's a bit obvious?" Mania asked.

"The man's dumber than a box of rocks," Sebastian replied. "I have access to the Codes, or lack thereof, to prove it."

Thirty minutes later, Sebastian was escorted to the courtyard at the scheduled time. He sat down at his regular bench with a tray of lunch - to look more normal -and waited for Kasey to arrive and, after an uncomfortable amount of time, the hulking man appeared. Sebastian knew how he wanted to get the letter to him and when to do so. It was only a matter of careful timing, vigilant watching, and good hand-eye coordination.

Sebastian took the eraser off his pencil and put a portion of the paper into the opening then put the eraser back. Satisfied that it would hold, he wrapped the remaining portion of the paper tightly around the pencil shaft.
A guard was zigzagging through the rows of tables. He eventually turned and walked down the aisle left of Sebastian and Kasey's row. He continued walking and turned again, going forward up the right of the same row. Once the guard was near Kasey, Sebastian took a quick look at the maps of all the people who might see what he had to do next in order to time his actions precisely.

In two steps, the guard would be beyond the window of opportunity.
There was a prisoner two rows away from Sebastian who was sitting at an angle which just barely granted him a direct line of sight. Any movement from Sebastian's area would be noticed and then examined by that prisoner.
One more step remained before the window closed.
Sebastian slid his food tray off the left side of the table forcefully. Half a second later, he flung the pencil at Kasey with a limp wrist and high trajectory to allow the pencil more time in the air.
The tray clattered to the floor loudly, the potential witness examined that distraction, the guard was one step past Kasey, and Kasey felt something hit his chest before it fell onto the table in front of him. He picked the note and pencil up and looked around curiously.

"That was stupid of you," Mania said. "A guard will know that was your tray. He'll have a few words for you, and then haul you off back to the cell."

"I know. Let's hope Kasey can read faster than a guard can investigate," Sebastian replied.
"If he can read at all," Mania said.

The inmates sitting directly in front of where the tray landed turned around at the same time Kasey finished removing the note from the pencil top. A guard's curiosity was piqued by the words of confusion from the prisoners as Kasey's brow furrowed reading the letter. The guard's map spawned a Code containing Sebastian's actions right when Kasey ripped the note angrily and looked at Sebastian. The guard approached Sebastian, but Kasey was already upon him, gripping the pencil so tightly that the knuckles of his right hand had turned white.

Sebastian stood and put his hands just above waist height to discourage aim at an easily punctured lung. A thread attached to Kasey's Shade of Hate spawned and solidified at the end, forming a juvenile Shade of the event happening at that moment. In it, Sebastian could see the approximate location he intended to plunge the pencil, which was somewhere around his left kidney. Kasey jabbed forward. Sebastian moved his hand down and pushed Kasey's just enough to cause his aim to detour into the space between his bladder and kidney. The pencil pierced through the flesh and ureter, ending its travel at Sebastian's lower-most rib where the lead and wood at the pencil's tip fractured and splintered. Kasey removed the pencil hastily and managed to impale Sebastian once more just millimeters from his kidney before the guard grabbed his arm and wrestled him to the ground. The time between Kasey's approach and eventual disarming spanned a grand total of two seconds.

Sebastian's knees buckled. He collapsed onto the floor as he applied pressure to the wounds on his side. Kasey's vengeful yelling passed, and then Sebastian heard the sound of the medic cart's small engine whirring in the distance, approaching fast.

"I don't think his next tattoo will be quite as menacing as the others," Mania said as Sebastian gasped with each painful breath.
"Two guns, three fists and then ... a number two pencil. Comical."
