Personalized Learning Buddy
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
We wanted to build the type of toy that we would've wanted as kids. So, we submitted the concept of a toy that can speak, listen & grow with you to the IBM Watson Mobile Developer Challenge & we won!
What makes your product special?
Unlike other toys out there, CogniToys don't require a smart device after set up. Our ability to provide a screen-free, educational play experience ensures we can engage kids interactively through diolouge, questions & answers, and a wide variety of educational content.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
We get to work with the world's most advanced language processing technology to do something amazing: Entertain and help young kids learn. We’ve been working with amazing technology from the start including Watson, 3D printers and custom hardware. We’ve spent the last 12 months tweaking and are proud that our first 5,000 Dinos have made their way home.

The Dino takes forever to turn on and start talking, even with great wifi. Once it is on, you need to repeat yourself repeatedly and it still does not understand you. It is beyond frustrating for a child to try and play with. Our Dino keeps asking if we want to hear a story. Even if we say "no", he still keeps asking. Then, when he asks our son questions during his incredibly boring story, he never is able to understand what our son is saying. You may think that maybe it is because he is a child but I also have tried responding and the Dino does not understand what I say either. I do not have an accent and am a reading specialist who specializes in phonics and sound development in children so I can assure you that my speech is clear, audible and phonetically accurate.
Our last attempt to "play" with this piece of garbage toy was when it accused (yes accused) our 4 year old son of using inappropriate language when speaking to it. I was in the room and it was not the case. That being said, I have a few choice, inappropriate words that I would like to say to CogniToys for taking our $100 on this junk!
The idea is really cute but obviously there are a lot of kinks that need to be addressed. This toy should not be sold until someone fixes these issues. The disappointment from our son about his "big gift from Santa" was beyond heartbreaking. I'm really at a loss
My son has been asking for his Dino since he found out i was buying him one (all the way through production)
The Dinos came and they both worked well...kind of. There are alot of things you say to them that they don't understand and I do not believe they can learn your child's interests.
Then one of them (my son's) started to go haywire. The start up music started to play over and over again and it kept asking to be connected to the wifi. On top of that the batteries were dead inside of two days. This type of a toy is going to be in constant use by a child and wifi drains batteries. Why would they use batteries and not a rechargeable solution like literally every other electronic device nowadays. So upset, he wanted this sooo bad and now I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop and the other one to stop functioning as well. They took quite a while to test this toy I really thought we were going to get an A+ product. Not only that, I have tried to get in touch with the company via their Kickstarter page and nada. No personal message, nothing. I understand they are probably busy due to the toy just being launched but this is ridiculous. They should have people dedicated to customer service, especially for the people who helped get them there. Its launch; and every new product is going to have some bugs. But to have no support is really inexcusable.
Well last night if finally worked, and the joy on my daughters face when he said her name and started responding to her questions and requests. She had it sing the ABC song to her multiple times. I am hoping the slow start doesn't damper he excitement to play with it more.
I am giving 3 stars due to early server issues, and will add star(s) depending on how much my daughter enjoys it over the next couple of weeks.
