Aya is haunted by the memory of losing her father. In steps Lord Varick whose daughter was also unjustly killed by the King. Lord Varick proposes a plan to avenge both his daughter and Aya's father. Aya agrees to assist Lord Varick in exchange for the purchase of her father's shop by Lord Varick and the opportunity to continue her father's vocation as a cogsmith. Now Aya must seduce the King who murdered her father even though this puts her in grave danger of execution.
I will admit that when I first began reading this book I was not immediately drawn in, but I am so happy that I kept reading. So often the main characters in stories are perfect and wonderful in every way, but Aya is flawed. She is clumsy with men, most people do not see her as being especially pretty, and because of her profession she is looked down upon in the community. Despite her imperfections and mistakes, she is a likable protagonist.
There were a few points in the book when I felt like the story was becoming too predictable, but then something would happen that would have me second guessing everything. The book does not wrap up the entire story in the end- there are still unanswered questions and unresolved issues, but such is life. I am very much looking forward to the second book in the series.
Wonderful job, Kate, and I really can't wait to see what you do and where you go next, both related to this series and with your writing career!
The Cogsmith's Daughter is now entering into my bookshelf of Gimme More! The story itself intertwines with an apocalyptic steampunk world alongside the dystopian royalty line of stories like Game of Thrones. Aya as the main character gives a genuine presence as we follow her journey to try and avenge her father while overturning a malicious king.
Kate's way of blending words into a world is astounding and I cannot wait for the next one.

The story is very well written with strong characters, and natural flowing conversations. It keeps one expecting anything to go wrong at any time.
It is a truly pleasurable read... Love the Originality!
