I am fairly new to coin collecting. My simple collection has so far been limited to the special edition two pound coins to mark historic events. I have recently branched out to include some of the historic crowns and £5 coins as the detail on these larger coins is simply stunning. More recently though, I really fancied getting hold of a piece of really old change. You know, Henry 8th kind of vintage. Imagine the hands that these small metal discs had been passed through, consider what they had been used to buy, where had they been all these 500 or so years. If only they could talk.
It was then that I realised I had no clue as to what such a coin would look like or indeed how much I should pay for it. Well, this book has answered these concerns. It has a huge collection of well photographed coins going back hundreds of years. It includes a small biography of the monarch of the time which really brings the historical context of the coins to life. It also includes the expected prices vs. conditions. In the introduction there is a nice bit about market trends and an explanation of numismatic terms which I found most interesting.
I certainly feel a lot more comfortable expanding my collection armed with this valuable reference. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in English coinage. Well written and good value.

Fantastic value. OK - so it's not uptodate but still an excellent guide to general values and the range of coins to be found in the UK. I ordered two copies and both came in very good condition. Highly recommended.
