A Kitchen Staple - "Olive" This!
Nine times out of ten, I'll grab the Extra Virgin Olive Oil over the more processes stuff. It is the healthiest version and packs the most flavor. However, there are times when you don't want a lot of flavor and need to cook at higher heat. That's where Colavita Delicate and Mild shines. The combination of refined and virgin olive oil stands up to hotter temperatures when cooking and it doesn't have the more prevalent olive flavor that the unrefined extra virgin varieties exhibit. Perfect for when the oil shouldn't be the star.This is a mass produced product and is why I drop a star. The listed countries the oil may come from include Italy, Greece, Turkey, Tunisia, and Spain. What you get is likely a blend of all or most of them. So what flavor it has is fairly generic. I love dipping bits of bread in a mix of oil and Italian herbs as a snack or appetizer. This doesn't have the character of extra virgin, but it is still surprisingly good. Buttery even. It can also be used for moisturizing and cosmetic purposes without leaving one smelling like they just took a bath in olives.For two liters, Colavita is a fair but not an amazing deal. I do feel it's a quality product at a fair price however. My bottle arrived with some slight shipping damage (photo), but didn't leak. The lid doesn't firmly close -- rather it reaches its tightest point and then "clicks" past it only to tighten again. This is by no means a deal breaker, but does not allow for storage in a horizontal position. The big bottle is easy to grip and pour. For general cooking purposes, I recommend getting this over more expensive smaller bottles that are best suited for use as the aforementioned bread dip or in salad dressings. Colavita Delicate and Mild is the Swiss-Army knife version of cooking oil, and deserves a place in the pantry of any serious home chef.~ Kort
