When one of Michael's characters gets in a tight spot, we fans know: it's time for a slight shortness of breath, a small rise in blood pressure and a surge in adrenalin.
Well, Miss Bonnie Parker (yup, named after the gun slinging gangster) in Michael's new novel "Cold Around The Heart gets into quite a few jams....
I hope that Michael uses Bonnie as a continuing heroine. Oh no, I gave it away that Bonnie escapes her dire situations. I want more of her, she is as tough as
her namesake and a very enjoyable read.
With what went down this past week in Boston and yesterday in Watertown, Ma. where I reside, it was a joy to finish Michael Prescott's "Cold Around The Heart"
this morning and return to a sense of serenity. I can't wait to read my 14th Michael Prescott book. Get writing Mike.....
Michael Prescott writes in a way that keeps the reader engaged with storylines that move quickly and provide just the right level of backstory. Most characters have multiple dimensions, rarely falling into a single stereotype, and are full of personality. He details enough of the main players' history to weave in plot twists the reader doesn't usually anticipate. His books are a quick read for me, which, honestly, is one reason I enjoy them so much. Fast-paced action, solid character development, interesting plot twists, and not a 40-hour time investment.
The protagonist Bonnie was crude, sarcastic and deeply troubled and her character was well supported by the obsessive officer Maguire and the skilled (but equally troubled) assassin, Pascal. Not to be outdone were the many additional players with strong roles by both Kirby and (very subtly) Des.
I thought the plot was developed well throughout the entire book. Most notably, chapter 15 was a thriller and chapters 31 & 32 were nail-biters! There were some surprises along the way with frequent chuckles at the off-handed, biting retorts of Bonnie. She was an assassin, a killer......yet despite her brash exterior and crude behavior, I felt empathy for her character. It was a good story with a solid ending and I truly enjoyed it.
The book "Stealing Faces" is still my all-time favorite from this author but Cold Around the Heart can hold its own. Nice.
So if inclined, stick a toe in the water and see if you like Miss Bonnie Parker and if you get hooked, it won't take long to breeze through the four books in the series.
Bonnie Parker (named after THE Bonnie Parker of Bonnie and Clyde fame) is a small-town Private Investigator who just happens to be an assassin on the side. A man fearing for his life comes to her for some help in dealing with a Columbian hit man named Pascal who has already killed a couple of his coworkers. He knows that he and his family will be next. Feeling like she can handle anything or anyone, Bonnie is intrigued enough to take his case. Quickly, her prey becomes the predator and Bonnie and Pascal become embroiled in a battle of wits and skills that will leave only one of them standing at the end.
With the suspense and twists of plot with which Michael Prescott is famous, this bullet of a novel rockets along until its surprising, eloquent conclusion. For those readers who haven't had the pleasure of reading Michael Prescott before or for those who have read only a few of his novels, be prepared to be blown away. Here's hoping there will be another new Michael Prescott novel in the not-so-distant future! Well done, Mr. Prescott, once again...
Bonnie Parker is a Private Investigator living in small town USA. Two things set her apart: she has a hat fetish and she is an assassin for hire. To date, she has not killed anyone but she will if the situation necessitates it. She is well equipped and she knows how to use the tools of her trade.
This novel had me by the small hairs on the back of my neck! I was compelled to continue reading as I could not put the book down. I had no idea where Prescott was going but I was definitely along for the ride.
This is the first novel I have read of an assassin for hire and I am not comfortable with the concept. As for the book itself, Excellent!
