When one of Michael's characters gets in a tight spot, we fans know: it's time for a slight shortness of breath, a small rise in blood pressure and a surge in adrenalin.
Well, Miss Bonnie Parker (yup, named after the gun slinging gangster) in Michael's new novel "Cold Around The Heart gets into quite a few jams....
I hope that Michael uses Bonnie as a continuing heroine. Oh no, I gave it away that Bonnie escapes her dire situations. I want more of her, she is as tough as
her namesake and a very enjoyable read.
With what went down this past week in Boston and yesterday in Watertown, Ma. where I reside, it was a joy to finish Michael Prescott's "Cold Around The Heart"
this morning and return to a sense of serenity. I can't wait to read my 14th Michael Prescott book. Get writing Mike.....
Michael Prescott writes in a way that keeps the reader engaged with storylines that move quickly and provide just the right level of backstory. Most characters have multiple dimensions, rarely falling into a single stereotype, and are full of personality. He details enough of the main players' history to weave in plot twists the reader doesn't usually anticipate. His books are a quick read for me, which, honestly, is one reason I enjoy them so much. Fast-paced action, solid character development, interesting plot twists, and not a 40-hour time investment.
The protagonist Bonnie was crude, sarcastic and deeply troubled and her character was well supported by the obsessive officer Maguire and the skilled (but equally troubled) assassin, Pascal. Not to be outdone were the many additional players with strong roles by both Kirby and (very subtly) Des.
I thought the plot was developed well throughout the entire book. Most notably, chapter 15 was a thriller and chapters 31 & 32 were nail-biters! There were some surprises along the way with frequent chuckles at the off-handed, biting retorts of Bonnie. She was an assassin, a killer......yet despite her brash exterior and crude behavior, I felt empathy for her character. It was a good story with a solid ending and I truly enjoyed it.
The book "Stealing Faces" is still my all-time favorite from this author but Cold Around the Heart can hold its own. Nice.
