"The balance is tipped more towards suspense in this story but believe me, the romance doesn't suffer and isn't forsaken. Alex is a compelling "gray" hero, straddling those ethical lines. I couldn't find a good stopping point so I gave up trying to sleep and got up in the middle of the night and finished the book." The Book Nympho.
"The hunt for latest serial killer that looks to be the person that took Mallory's sister was quite labyrinth. The author did a great job of takings us down an intricate path that leads to an astonishing ending." ~Snsreview

From the Inside Flap
From the Back Cover
Lindsey Keeble sang along to the radio, trying to pretend she wasn't freaked out by the dark. It was one in the morning and she hated driving this lonely stretch of highway between Greenville and Boden. Rain was threatening to turn to snow. The wind was gusting so forcefully that the tall trees looming high above her on the ridge made her swerve nervously toward the center line. The back tires slid on the asphalt and she slowed; no way did she want to wreck her precious little car.
She worked evenings at a gas station in Boden. It was quiet enough she usually got some studying done between customers. Tonight everyone and their dog were filling up ahead of a possible early winter storm. You'd think they'd never seen snow before.
A flash of red lights in her rearview had her heart squeezing. Dammit!
She hadn't been speeding--she couldn't afford a ticket and never drank alcohol. She signaled to pull over and stopped on the verge. Lindsey lived responsibly because she wanted a life bigger than her parochial hometown. She wasn't some hillbilly. She wanted to travel and see the world--Paris, Greece, maybe the pyramids if the unrest settled down. She peered through the sleet-drenched glass as a black SUV pulled in tight behind her.
A tall dark figure approached her vehicle. A cop's gold shield tapped against the glass. Frigid damp air flooded the interior as she rolled down the window and she huddled into her jacket as rain spat at her.
"License and registration." A low voice rumbled in that authoritative way cops had. He wore a dark slicker over black clothes. The gun on his hip glinted in the headlights of his vehicle. She didn't recognize his face, but then she couldn't really see his features with ice stinging her eyes.
"What's this about?" Her teeth chattered. She found the documents in her glove box and purse, and handed them over. Her hands returned to grip the hard plastic of the steering wheel as she waited. "I wasn't speeding.""There's an alert out on a stolen red Neon so thought I'd check it out.""Well, this is my car and I've done nothing wrong." She knew her rights. "You've got no reason to stop me.""You were driving erratically." The voice got deeper and angrier. She winced. Never piss off a cop. "Plus, you've got a broken taillight. That gives me a reason."Lindsey's worry was replaced by annoyance. She snapped off her seat belt and applied the parking brake. She'd been shafted last year when another driver had sideswiped her in a parking lot and then claimed she'd been at fault to the insurers. "It was fine when I left for work this afternoon. I haven't hit anything in the meantime." Goddamn it.
"Go take a look." The cop stood back. He had a nice face despite the hard mouth and even harder eyes. Maybe she could sweet talk him out of a ticket, not that she was real good at sweet talk. Her dad could fix the light in the morning but if she had to pay a ticket as well, every hour of work today would have been for nothing.
She pulled the hood of her slicker over her head and climbed out. The headlights of his SUV blinded her as she took a few steps. She shielded her gaze and frowned. "I don't see anything--"
A surge of fire shot through her back. Pain exploded in a shockwave of screeching agony that overwhelmed her from the tips of her ears to the gaps between her toes. She'd never experienced anything like it. Sweat bloomed on her skin, clashing with sleet as she hit the tarmac. Rough hands grabbed her around the middle and hoisted her into the air. She couldn't control her arms or legs. She was shifted onto a hip where something unyielding bit into her stomach. She fought the urge to vomit even as her brain whirled.
It took a moment to make sense of what was happening.
This man wasn't a cop.
Still reeling from the stun gun, she couldn't get enough purchase to kick him, but she flailed at his knees and tried to elbow him in the balls. It didn't make any difference and she found herself dumped into the cold confines of the rear of his SUV. He zapped her again until her fillings felt like they were going to fall out and her bladder released.
The world tilted and she was on her front, face pressed into a dirty rubber mat, arms yanked behind her as something metal bit into one wrist, then the other. Handcuffs. Oh, God. She was handcuffed. A sharp pain ripped through her chest--if she didn't calm down she was going to die of a heart attack.
A ripping sound rang out in the darkness. She was shoved onto her back, and a piece of duct tape slapped over her mouth. It tangled with her hair and was gonna hurt like a bitch when it came off.
Something told her that was the least of her worries.
There was no reason for him to kidnap her unless he was going to hurt her. Or kill her.The realization made everything stop. Every movement. Every frantic breath. Her heart raced and bile burned her throat as she stared into those cold, pitiless eyes. With a grunt he slammed the door closed, plunging her into a vast and consuming darkness. Rain beat the metal around her like an ominous drum. She was scared of the dark. Scared of monsters. Humiliated by the cold dampness between her legs. How could this have happened to her? One minute she was driving home, the next...
Where was her phone?
She rolled around, trying to feel it in her pockets. Shit. It was still in her purse in the passenger seat of her car. There was a crashing sound in the trees. She closed her eyes against the escalating panic. He'd gotten rid of her car. An elephant-sized lump threatened to choke her. She'd worked her ass off for that car, but finances and credit ratings were moot if she didn't survive this ordeal. This man was going to hurt her. She wriggled backward so her fingers could scrabble with the lock but there was nothing, and the panel above her head didn't budge even when she kicked it. How dare he do this to me? How dare he treat her as if she was nothing? She wanted to fight and rail against the injustice but as the SUV started up, she was immobilized by terror. All her life she'd fought to make things better, fought for a future and this man, this bastard, wanted to rip it all away from her. It wasn't fair. There had to be a way out. There had to be a way to survive.
She didn't want to die. She especially didn't want to die in the dark with a stranger who had eyes as cold as death. Tears brimmed. It wasn't fair. This wasn't fair.

The short of it is I love listening to Eric narrate but the story is a little too graphic and gruesome for me.
It's very difficult to tell you how I feel about the two main characters in the story as this is one of those romantic suspense stories which focuses more on the suspense than the romance and building the relationship between the hero and heroine, though there are a number of rather sizzling encounters between them. Throughout the story, I had a hard time trying to come to terms with who Mallory and Alex were as people.
Mallory is an FBI agent and she's suffered a terrible loss in her childhood which she is still trying to solve. These two things define her and because of it, she is single-minded, driven and married to her work. She lived for the sole purpose of solving the mystery of her sister's disappearance. To me, those things do not give her character enough depth for me to connect with her and get to know her. I found this made her a very single dimensional character for me. I would have liked her to have been more multi dimensional but I also understand that was what drove her and made her who she was.
I adore Alex. He's so many things. Soldier, war hero, prisoner of war, security consultant, friend, assassin, lover and protector. He's so troubled and honorable at the same time. He is conflicted about what he has to do and while he's not crazy about what he has to do, he's honest about it and he's honest with himself. I loved that he was so protective and caring of Mallory, right from the beginning. He was a man marking time until Mallory came into his life, then caring for someone change the meaning of his life and even when things got crazy and he was in an untenable situation, he was strong enough to do what was right for Mallory first and foremost. That made him a hero for me.
Here is a favorite moment of mine in the story:
Her mouth went dry. How could she not fall for a guy who went out of his way to protect her while also giving her the space she needed to do her job? Just looking at him made her ache. “Tell me you aren’t as perfect as you seem, Alex.” “Not even close to perfect.” His blue- gray eyes darkened. “Not a complete a--hole either.”
The suspense aspect of the story is very well researched and written. In fact, some of it is so graphically described it makes me sick to my stomach. Certain things happen in the story that leave me feeling rather unpleasant, one of which to Mallory when she gets interrogated by a distrustful colleague, to cite one of the milder instances.
Listening to this story being narrated to be, even with listening to Eric's wonderful voice, left me feeling slightly nauseated. This story should have come with a warning label that says "Warning: Graphic content. This story contains scenes that some people may find disturbing!"
I would have liked to have seen some more time spent on developing the relationship between Alex and Mallory rather than the detail in describing some of the dead bodies they were finding at crime scenes.
I would also have liked better insights into Mallory as a person which gave her character greater depth. It would also have made the romance much more credible if they spent more time together in order for their relationship to develop as they got to know each other. This didn't happen till a good way into the second part of the story and then it felt rushed. As it was, the story spent most of its time jumping between both characters, most of which with them spent apart. How can you build a relationship when you spent more than 60% of the story apart?
If you like a really good romantic suspense, heavy on the suspense, you will enjoy this. There were parts of it that were thoroughly heart pounding.
I think I will wait a while before tackling the other books in the series just for a bit of a breather from the excitement, even if they are all narrated by Eric. I'll move on to some other things he's narrated and take a break from the gruesome.
The suspense in this book was definitely exciting. This book alternated from going from Mallory’s point of view, to that of Alex’s and to the killers point of view. I loved that! And although it might sound of bit confusing, it definitely wasn’t. I also found there was a perfect blend of suspense and romance.
The two main characters Mallory and Alex where very fun to get to know and I enjoyed getting to know them. Both characters where a bit tragic in there own way. Mallory, having to live a life without her twin sister and having the exact same face as the little girl that is still being looked for every year by one of the senators. And Alex, the ex-soldier who survived a Moroccan prison and the death of his mates. I loved these two.
‘A Cold Dark Place’ was a wonderful exciting read that kept me hooked. And above all it made me want to read more books by this author for sure. If you’re looking for a Romantic Suspense novel, this one definitely gets my recommendation.
I have to say this was one of my favorite listens, it pulled you in and made you setup as the author and narrator told a compelling story that will break your heart as they take you on a thrilling trip of who done it and why.
What shock me the most was this author is from Canada and had the area down so well. I live in the area she wrote about which added to the read for me since I could relate to the towns or cities in this story. She definably did her research.
This was a well written book that flowed easy for me, it kept me on the edge as they raced to the finish line of who did it. I did not find a boring moment in this book but thrills and suspense of who, why and how. The story was gripping, the characters I felt I knew and became wrapped up in their story from the very beginning all the way to the end. I completely fell in love with Alex and Mallory and it tore at my heart wanting them to be together and for justice to be found.
All the characters were outstanding by the time you get to the end you feel you know them and they are apart of your family. Even the killer you hate but you do feel sorry for him, he was pulled into the killing when he was young with the taking of Mallory's twin. There is one place where you even root for him and than you just feel sorry for him and grow to pity him. You are more than glad to see justice done but you are still sad because I do feel he wasn't really a bad man just pulled into something out of his control. You just want him caught so no more women will be killed.
My heart broke for each character as they rush to find the killer and hope to save a few women from harm. This story does have a wonderful happy ending but at the same time it is sad. Ms. Anderson pulled me in and hooked me from the start, the narrator kept me there with his wonderful narration. I do have to say I loved the vigilante I know we should not but he did make sure all those he took out were guilty before giving them justices. I was cheering him on as he shot and killed the killer. I didn't feel guilty at all, does that make me bad?
I love Toni writing style the way she pulls you in and keeps you. I am so looking forward to reading and listening to more books by her. She has been added to my all time favorite authors list.

By Toni Anderson
5 stars
What an amazing read! I still have goose bumps after finishing it! When I first read the blurb for this book I thought it sounded good and Toni Anderson is a new to me author so I thought I would give it ago – I am so, so glad that I did! I was hooked from the very first page! It was a brilliant mix of romance and suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat and also turning the pages just to see what was going to happen next!
Mallory was a great female lead and I could feel the passion she had for her job, she was determined to find out what happened to her twin sister. I was rooting for her the whole way through to finally get the answers she wanted.
Alex was a really intriguing character and I loved reading about him – there was chemistry between him and Mallory that was quite evident. I really loved the mystery surrounding him although I was worried he would end up hurting Mallory – this is one of the things that kept me turning the pages as I wanted to find out what would happen with them.
A Cold Dark Place was a fantastic 5 star romantic suspense novel that I highly recommend!

The fact this is about a twin should make it extremely interesting, but instead bad writing leave only very many questions- why was she under the bed? (I know she did this often, but why?), why did the kidnapper not go for her much earlier? This needs explained, and much more too.
The sex, well if this was a steamy romance, fine, but it is supposed to be a thriller. Did the author struggle for what to say so filled pages with sex? Apart from being boring - and out of place, this takes away from any excitement there might have been. (I doubt there would have been anyway, but who knows.)
Again, the ending us pure sop, romance style rather than thriller. make up your mind which a book is!

This read was action-packed, it had twists and turns, it had danger it was a thriller and suspenseful from the start to finish. I was left on the edge of my seat numerous times and left reeling.
The characters in this read were real, and their feeling and emotions were raw, strong and powerful to the point every emotion I could feel felt as though I was there alongside the characters. These characters bring an extra level of brilliance to this read, with incredible chemistry between the two its a story definitely not to be missed!
I cannot wait to see what else comes to this series, and what else this author can bring, she will definitely be on my go-to author list after this read!
What an incredible book that should not be missed!

As to the story - wow, so much going on and although some of the central character premise seemed incredibly unrealistic, Toni weaves her plot and character development so well it is easy to suspend belief and buy into the narrative of the story. The pacing of the plot unfolded nicely throughout the novel. There was just enough world building to make it believable without getting overly procedural and neither the murder/kidnapping plot and world building got in the way of some great protagonist character development which played out with some great set pieces that also moved along the central plot as well as the developing the relationship between Alex and Mallory. I really bought into Alex and Mallory as a couple, I wanted them to get their HEA, even as for much of the novel I was wondering how the author would achieve that given their polar opposite sides at times.
There are a number of plot points to uncover as you read through the book, I guessed quite a few, but this didn’t detract from my enjoyment and there was one I totally missed at the end and one I didn’t quite get right. I liked that I was able to work some of the plot points out as I read. I often have theories going on in the back of my mind when reading and it’s good to see them proved or disproved as you read along. I personally hate thriller/crime novels which are so obtuse you never work out anything until the last 15 pages and in some obscure way it would have been almost impossible to have worked out.
Overall this was a rip-roaring yarn with good pacing, interesting, but not obtuse central and supporting plots that helped the character development far outweighed the minor plot holes and unrealistic premise around some characters. I’d definitely recommend it to friends who enjoy thrillers and romance suspense.
Looking forward to reading/listening to the next instalment.
