Cold Steel is famous for raising the bar in the knife industry and our Recon 1 tactical folders are setting a standard that's hard to beat. Why? Because they are as tough as nails and will cut like a chain saw! Every facet of their construction has been over engineered to make them as strong, durable and effective as humanly possible. The blades are made out of imported Japanese AUS 8A stainless steel that's been vacuum heat treated and sub-zero quenched and the handles feature G-10 laminate scales artfully contoured and scalloped for a terrific non slip grip.
Cold Steel is famous for raising the bar in the knife industry. The Recon 1 continues the trend with its tough-as-nails build and chainsaw-like performance, setting a standard that's tough to beat. Every facet of the Recon 1's construction has been over-engineered to make it as strong, durable, and effective as humanly possible. The blade is made of imported Japanese AUS 8A stainless steel that's been vacuum heat treated and sub-zero quenched, while the handle features G-10 laminate scales artfully contoured and scalloped to produce a superior nonslip grip. Plus, the knife is held together by the latest in high-strength mechanical fasteners and further anchored by a 6061 heat-treated spacer.
To complement the knife's tactical mission, Cold Steel gave the Recon 1 a tough, black coated finish, which gives the blade three major tactical advantages. First, it helps the blade resist rust. Second, it eliminates glare and light reflections, which otherwise might give the user away. And third, the coating is a superior lubricant, which causes the blade to slip through even tough material with markedly less friction. This means you can cut deeper and far longer than with the coated blade. Cold Steel also added a thumb disc and extra-strong pocket clip, making the Recon 1 easy to open and carry. The clip is completely ambidextrous, and its small size is designed to keep the palm comfortable under protracted use. Finally, the knife is outfitted with the company's revolutionary Tri Ad lock, which practically eliminates lock failure.

It came razor sharp; one of those you-don't-even-feel-it-cutting-you kind of knives. I thought it was dull because I didn't feel anything, but a few seconds later, blood was running out my finger tip. The blade is wide and thick, extremely intimidating/tactical look.
The handle is awesome too. It looks cool, and the finger grooves are well placed and comfortable. I tried stabbing stuff with it (tanto points are ideal for stabbing) and it went all the way through my school folder (plastic front and back, over 100 sheets of notebook paper inside) so I must say, this is a pretty good knife. It comes with an extra pocket clip, and the clip can be adjusted for southpaws (lefties).
The lockback/tri-ad-lock system is EXTREMELY secure. In fact, it may be quite difficult to close the first few times. It closes a bit easier now, but you still need two hands and it can be somewhat dangerous to close (say, if you press down on the blade too hard trying to close it and chop off your fingers) but nothing too difficult, as long as you're decently strong.
G10 handle scales are nicely textured, provide a great grip.
Overall a great knife for EDC, utility, showing off, self defense, etc.
Sharp as Hell
durable and tactical looking
two clips;can be adjusted for lefties
Tanto point great for stabbing
Strong locking system
Surprisingly light for its size
Lockback is kinda hard to close
Other reviews have said the finish comes off somewhat easily, but I haven't had it long enough to verify that.
4 inch blade may be illegal in some states, but thats only if the cops catch you ;)
UPDATE February 28, 2012
I've used this knife for whittling on campouts, as well as opening packages and other such tasks, and the coating hasn't come off yet. I've gotten used to the tri-ad-lock and can close it easily now, and the edge is still as razor sharp as when I got it. Friends freak out when they see how big the blade is, and are even more amazed at how light it is. The Recon 1 has held up well, with no looseness in any aspect. Truly an epic knife.
PROTIP: Carry with a Swiss army knife for total utility and self defense coverage (Swiss army knife for utility and Recon 1 for self defense)
UPDATE November 11th, 2013
The knife is still going strong. It's still sharp as hell and I haven't had to sharpen it yet! The only thing that has changed is the coating, which has chipped just a tiny bit in spots on the spine of the blade. The coating is wearing down on the blade itself, but not to the point that it has exposed any metal yet. The action of the blade got a bit squeaky after a campout in a dusty area, but I figure a quick disassembly to remove bits of sand and a lubrication will take care of it just fine
