5.0 out of 5 stars Goes with me everywhere!
By TJ Ludvik on August 7, 2022
I keep it in my, "Get home bag." I like the longer handle. I don't need a sharp edge for killing zombies, but other than that, it's a winner. I do want to modify the handle where it fits into the spade. It sticks out the least little bit and I'm afraid when digging it may chip away or fracture the handle. As shipped, I am satisfied. Over all my best rating: I'll buy again if needed.

I love this shovel but not the price as I've since seen it cheaper elsewhere. Used it to hack down a clump of thin trees that grew around a pole we needed to work on, took it home and split logs with it for the stove. When splitting the logs the end of the handle started to fracture behind the blade where I was forcing it through a tough knot in the log but I shamfered the broken part off with a knife so it is now flush with the back of the spade. (See photo). It is a spade that is as good as a machete that you can carry without alarming the general public. Dig a small hole with it... beat your way through some overgrown woodland with it.., or beat you way through a rough violent neighbourhood with it LOL.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very sturdy and portable.

Very sturdy shovel. Unlike cheap folding military imitation shovel that bend when you are trying to dig into tough sod, this one will remain strong. Ideal for camping and to put in your rucksack. Like most item where a wood handle is involved, the manufacturer always put some kind of varnish on the handle. Any proper tool's handle must be treated in order to offer a comfortable grip and a long lasting life. This means removing the varnish and putting a proper finish. In this case a mix of 50/50 Lin seed oil and Pine tar. To remove the varnish, a scraper or a sharp knife held at 90 degrees will make quick work of it.

Like in the pictures below, the result will be a tool with a beautiful handle that will offer you a good purchase on the tool and preventing blisters when using it for a prolonged period.

The shovel arrived partially sharpened. It will be easy to sharpen it to cut like a razor. I left mine as it is because even in its state of ruggedly sharpness it is a wicked tool. If it was more sharp, I will be afraid to hurt myself. It is a great tool to dig for camping or metal detecting and to leave in your car. Of course because of its short handle and great portability, you will have to be on your knees when using it.

Some people use it for trowing practice and it does a good job at this. In its current form it will also prove to be a great self defense weapon. In case of Zombies apocalypse, you can sharpen it to a razor finish at it will be a devastating tools. A word of caution, you should also get the sheath that is sold for it. Even as it is, you could cut yourself badly or damage your rucksack if the blade is left exposed. The shovel should have come with the sheath as standard equipment and not an extra to buy as an option. If left naked, it is an accident waiting to happen.
