The Espada was designed by custom knife maker Andrew Demko and Cold Steel President Lynn C. Thompson. Their goal was to harness old world craftsmanship with new world advancements in mechanics and materials to create a new series of tactical folders for today's Conquistadors. Like the swords of old the Espada's are not for the weak, timid, faint of heart or those desiring another spring assisted play toy. Just pick one up and you'll see what we mean! Definitely not politically correct, they are huge yet surprisingly well balanced and feature dramatically upswept clip point blades that are ideal for cutting, slashing and piercing. Made from vacuum heat-treated and sub-zero quenched Japanese 8A stainless steel and hollow ground to a thin, razor sharp edge, they will cleave through just about any obstacle or target in their path. To make your hand the real master of these awesome blades we have paired them with state of the art pistol grip handles. Strongly curved and equipped with multiple finger grooves and even a sub-hilt in the two larger models, they work perfectly in either a forward or reverse grip while offering unprecedented retention and reach through multiple grip extension options. To minimize overall weight and maximize strength and rigidity, we have CNC machined the frames and integral bolsters of the Espada's handles from 7075 Aluminum billets. While quite costly, this material rivals even Titanium in strength and can endure years of the hardest abuse. Finally to make the handle as beautiful as it is effective and strong, we have mirror polished the dovetailed bolsters and attached glossy black G-10 handle scales using the latest high tech fasteners. We don't believe any tactical folder can make a credible claim to being a "pocket sword" without possessing an incredibly strong and reliable lock and the Espada's are no exception. That's why we have equipped each model with our new multi-patented Tri-Ad lock.

However, there are some issues:
First, when received, there are minor scratches on the blade. I have no idea what the deal is with that; I’m no knife collector but for this price point it shouldn’t be an issue. Luckily, unlike another reviewer, there was no rust.
Second, the knife box it came in was pretty beaten up (guessing that’s related to the scratches on the blade). I’m thinking this was probably at a swap meet or somewhere where it was publically handled, looked at and taken out of the factory box many times; so not sure if I need to knock some stars off the seller for this.
The box itself is just cardboard and knife wrapped in bubble wrap inside. At this price I’d expect it to come in some better packaging (packaging is a Cold Steel issue; condition of package is the sellers issue). Handle is fine and only one side of the top stainless steel ‘part’ had a plastic protective film; the other side was missing it. Since this is a reoccurring theme in the negative reviews (scratches on the blade, dull blade, rust, etc.) I’m going with “seller issues”; in my case it was KnifeCountryUSA.
Third, the triad lock is pretty tough to press down to release the blade. Another reviewer (Roger - search reviews for "tension"; why Amazon wont let me embed a link to that review dumbfounds me!) had this problem but more severe, so I might follow his instructions to tweak the tension rod – that’s a quality control issue with Cold Steel.
eh, Roger's review: https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R36ADJN115O6V2/ref=cm_cr_getr_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B001DZM5QS
Fourth, related to the triad lock, I can hear and feel some mechanical issues with metal rubbing against metal – friction. It’s not smooth and the moving metal parts seem dry. I couldn’t open this using just my thumb and outside motion because of the friction. I applied a hefty amount of machine oil to it, let it sit and the fiction is noticeably less. I can now open it with my thumb and some motion (caution, this will lop off finger tips if it folds back). However, there is still friction (sound and feel – it’s not butter smooth like a knife in this caliber should be). Quality control on Cold Steels part or sellers responsible consideration in keeping the condition? I’m going with both but most on Cold Steel’s control on quality.
Also, there was some residual machine dust / dirt inside the handle. I used a q-tip / cotton bud to clean that off along with the added machine oil. That worked perfect (see pic).
Summary: Cold Steel gets 5 stars for the design, beauty and badassness; they also get some marks cut for the friction (machining) and box; Cold Steel really needs to add a sturdier box. Condition of box and scratches on the blade I’m going to chalk up to the seller.
This knife is for one purpose only, fighting (equate that to self-defense if it helps justify). My blade seems (eh, looks) sharp but I haven’t used it to cut anything. I do know kitchen knives intimately well and can see the edge on this Espada is no joke. I keep my kitchen knives very, very sharp! It’s beautiful to hold and look at! To cure the scratches and rust issues, Cold Steel needs to sell these direct and not via third party on Amazon.
That said, I’ll probably put this in my gun safe as I have no reason to carry it. I’d rather get shot with one of my guns than attacked with this!
Update (next day): after this review I closed the knife and lopped off part of my finger tip (yeah, just like another reviewer did!) Blood everywhere! I handle very sharp kitchen knives daily and haven’t cut myself in many years; chalking that one up to user issues – a day latter and finger is unusable and still bleeding! Knife is so sharp I barely felt the finger pad getting cut off; I’m still looking for it. Open / close it enough and it may happen to you too!
What can I say that hasn't been said already? I'm glad, after handling this beauty, that I didn't get the XL. This is more than enough knife for almost anyone but those who are "over compensating" so to speak.
This knife is as big as a Ka-Bar. Excellent fit and finish, tight gaps, exquisite blade & super light for its size. It's a piece of hard core aggressive jewlery. As an former Infantryman I've owned dozens of knives and this is Easily the best, the BEST, EDC Ive ever owned.
...now let's hope I don't lose it :-)

When I purchased my 5.5" Espada it was only around $200. I have had it for 3 months now. It has not let me down.Read more
