Product Description

For many years now Cold Steel has been fascinated with the Black Knife or Skean Dhu (Gaelic) of the ancient Scottish warriors. Used as a utility or back-up knife and worn under the sleeve, tucked inside a jacket or slipped into the top of a stocking it was thin, flat "pointy" and light as a feather. Cold Steel is proud to offer you our latest interpretation of this timeless knife in the form of an updated Tactical folder we call the Hold Out. Each blade is made of our tried and true AUS 8A Stainless Steel, and like its ancient predecessor's, features a thin, acutely pointed tip that's sharp as the proverbial needle. And it glides effortlessly through even the most puncture resistant materials while remaining remarkably resistant to breakage. Adding to their value and wicked effectiveness, each knife has been precisely and beautifully hollow ground before being honed by hand to a razor edge that will fling hairs from your arm like magic. The handles of our Hold Out series are also reminiscent of their ancient forbearers. Fashioned from the finest American made G-10 laminate, they offer a palm hugging profile and a thin, flat cross section that resists rolling or twisting in the palm while remaining comfortable and versatile enough to accommodate a wide variety of gripping styles. To protect your fingers from our Hold Out's remarkably sharp blades, each knife comes with our record breaking Tri-Ad lock. Proven to way out perform the competition in the most brutal tests imaginable, it's simply the best lock available for folding knives at any price. For discreet carry and immediate access, the Hold Outs are supplied with polished stainless steel pocket clips and thumb studs on the blade. This arrangement allows a wide variety of carry options as well as lightning quick, one-handed deployment.

This is a wickedly sharp blade. I've had the XL version of the hold out for a while and it is an amazingly well balanced knife, but it doesn't fit in some pockets and is also illegal to carry in Texas. Well the logical thing to do is buy the 4inch version, and I am glad I did. When you buy the serrated Hold Out you get the privilege of the chisel edged tip of this blade, which is friggin field surgery sharp! So sharp!
The grip fits surprisingly snug in the hand and the Cold Steel lock is excellent! Their knives are built to last, though you should keep this blade oiled to prevent rust.
The dangerous serrations paired with a solid build make this a GREAT self defense knife.

Pros: very sharp, very light, strong lock, G10 handles, good edc size.
Cons: lock very stiff at 1st, pocket clip set way too tight & is short, G10 too aggressive of texture against pants
To make it better, I very slightly bent the clip for less tension and lightly sanded the G10 that rides against pants with some 600 grit.

Like any knife the Holdout can be used for mundane stuff like opening stuff and cutting meats. The design obviously has a defensive intention, given it's size and the fully serrated blade, the latter of which is useful for ripping though clothing whereas plain edges, if not properly sharpened, will just slide along the surface of, say, denim. The Hold-out isn't intimidating like the Spyderco Civilian, its just a simple design that has a serrated 4 inch blade. I like the fact that it is a full-size knife that weighs as much as a 3-finger mini knife.

About the 'Tri-ad' lock...Initially the lock was extremely stiff and I could barely open it with one hand. If you flick your knives open, then forget about this knife because that won't happen, even after the break-in period because of the peculiar location of the knife's pivot. Fortunately, the Tri-ad does break-in after about 30-40 openings. After breaking it, its still heavier than, for example, Spyderco Endura's lock-back but is easily opened. While I am still a Spyderco fan at heart, I gotta say that I sincerely appreciate the added heft and security of Cold Steel's Tri-ad lock-back, which is really all it is, a hugely robust lock-back, which IMO is the best type of lock for fast-load torques.

The Hold-Out's G-10 liners are about as thick as those on Spyderco's Military, which is to say very thick. To my surprise, the liners don't flex at all. I expected low-quality from Cold Steel and am happily proven wrong.

Again, the blade on this version is fully-serrated, so you're going to need sharpening rods to re-sharpen your knife, not stones.

great knife. i don't know steel but this guy is VERY sharp. not the easiest opening knife but not a matter of life and death. my only gripe is the clip. totally useless till you loosen it up. i took it off and bent the s*** out of it till it would fit over that lip you have on all blue jeans. it still snags on it but at least i don't need a bulldozer to get it out of my pocket now. i heard taking some sandpaper to the surface right under the clip would help but after i took the clip off to sand it i sanded the wrong side of the knife. stupid me!

I have gone through countless knives and broken more than I can count. I don't misuse my knives , I just use them every day almost constantly.
This is the best knife I have ever bought, and comparing to the quality and price of other knives, this one should cost $100-150 at least.
I have been using it every day since my purchase in November 2014, and almost half a year later, it is still the best! I only had to give it a little sharpening to renew the edge, but that was only after I had dropped it from a 4 story roof on to pavement with the blade out.
Best knife ever! Takes harsh conditions, and does not slip in your hand even when it is very cold and wet out. Absolutely recommended!

Excellent knife. It feels solid in your hand, and dont worry about your hand slipping forward on the blade, it wont, if that is your concern, the g10 is very grippy it like sticks in your hand, unlike the ti-lite Its hard to flick it open fast using the thumb stud, but you can open it fairly quickly if you flick it open w your wrist while you push the thumb stud to open it.

Best EDC you can get, and Im not a CS fan either. I was surprised that this replaced all my spyderco, kershaw, and benchmades as an EDC because it is so much bigger and more capable yet so slim in the pocket or on the waistband. When carried on the waistband it disappears and you forget its there. Very large knife in a very slim package but the handle shape an material is so grippy that you will feel ultra confident in your grip. CS does some "silly" testing but this knife is tougher than nails and cut circles around my BM kershaw and Spyderco's, so much so that I gave away my original G10 dragonfly and delica, and kershaw leek and shallot(all of which I absolutely love still) as gifts because they were obsolete after I received this. I cannot say enough about the quality and more importantly the practicality and capabilities of this knife. I expected a bit of a novelty from this knife but it is an absolute gem. The lock is stiff( i believe its 150lbs) but it wears in very nicely with use and it sounds like you racked a 1911 every time you flick it which becomes very easy and smooth when you get it down. Flip it from high on the handle and it deploys lightning fast. Not a fan of serrations but these are great, ultra tough, and scary sharp. Again I cant say enough about this knife, best folder I have ever owned or handled. ZT's are cool but at least 100$ more than this and you most likely will case them and never carry.
