I also used Tuf Glide lubricant on the blade pivot and all contact/moving parts, which eased the opening and closing of the blade considerably. And I can in fact deploy this blade with a fast flick of my wrist, almost as easily as I do with any of the Voyager XL models.
NOTE: This knife has a slenderer profile than say an XL Voyager does, and the G-10 handles are liner-less, unlike the Voyagers, which sport steel grip liners. Still, all plastics are not created equal (plastics vary as much as metals do), and Cold Steel has already proved that these G-10 grips are robust enough to give reliable service beyond what most people would ever subject this knife to, without the use of metal grip liners.
NOTE: I've purchased sixteen Cold Steel folding knives to date, and this is the first black-bladed model that I've bought. While I've had no real issue with Cold Steel's use of AUS 8A blade steel (check out all those You Tube videos!), I've never thought much of their Tuff-Ex "Dip and Ship" blade paint... This new DLC blade finish is vastly superior, and combined with the new Carpenters CTS XHP Alloy blade steel, Cold Steel has really ramped up the quality on an already excellent knife. This knife easily justifies its' higher price.
While I cannot speak to durability and such at this time, given the Recon 1's previous track record, I see no reason to doubt that it will provide even better long-term durability and edge retention with the new blade steel, and the DLC blade treatment will most certainly outperform the old "Dip and Ship" coating on the pre 2015 models. Cold Steel's move to "DLC" will see me finally bringing in several of their black-bladed models.
Yes, these latest renditions are expensive right now, as they clear out the pre 2015 models; in fact, this knife has already dropped $10.00 below what I paid for it. Still, I suppose the month's worth of fondling I've enjoyed with it is worth something! I can hardly wait for the Blackout Espadas to begin shipping, as I'll want a L and XL version of that model for sure!
At any rate, I'm very pleased with my new Recon 1 XL Tanto, and would readily recommend this knife to anyone looking for a high quality, bigass folder! I would be interested in an XL Spear Point variant of this model as well. The Clip Point category will be filled by the Blackout Espada, when it finally comes online.
P.S. For an everyday beater knife, the best bang-for-the-buck out there right now, is the pre 2015 Voyager Series. Many of these, even the XL's, can be had for under $50.00 delivered! Just maybe, you should be doing some early Christmas shopping?
P.P.S. The Paracord Black/Copper (King David Mummy) lanyard looks awesome on this blackedout Recon 1!
I think I grew a Duck Dynasty beard the minute I place this knife in my paw! Just sheer awesomeness that's razor sharp out of the box and dwarfs all other knife blades. Just exudes sheer toughness with n the material used to make this tank of a knife.
Good action and you can even gravity flip this puppy (if your manly enough).
Awesome quickness in shipping. It arrived in less than 30 hours (prime member shipping)
If you want the biggest, baddest folder out there. Then purchase this beast!
