The latest addition to our Katana machete Series, the Tactical Katana is closely Modeled after our hugely popular and record breaking warrior Series Katana. With its deeply curved blade, it offers more "sword-like" cutting performance, and with its broad full tang, solid steel tsuba and injection over-molded high impact polymer handle its incredible durable. We spared no expense to re-create the look of a traditional cord wrapped handle, fushi and kashira but using modern materials that will not shrink, warp, tarnish or Rot and require very little maintenance to retain peak performance. Fully sharpened right here in our ventura HQ, the Tactical Katana machete comes complete with a cor-ex back sheath for ease of carry and storage.

Of course like most people testing out a new blade your have to try it out on the packaging, It cut the plastic it came in fairly well as expected, It cut the box fairly well but out of the box it wasn't fully up to the cutting the box cleanly in half but I managed to cut it 2/3rds of the way.
The handle felt better than the other reviewer made it out to be in my opinion but I didn't extensively cut with it, The sheath is well made with no problems like the blade poking through the sheath, The Sheath does not lend itself to Iado strikes but I doubt it was ever conceived to be fastly drawn but it would work well against shrubbery, plastic bottles or an occasional zombie invader, The sheath comes with a strap so you can carry it like a regular mall ninja but don't expect to be able to draw it quickly especially not when the blade is clasped shut.
While it's not perfect I will still give it 5 stars for being another fun offering from Cold Steel, It's a great item for casual backyard cutting, Collecting and most certainly for self defense.
The tsuba (crossguard) was stamped but the edges weren't de-burred leaving a super sharp edge which cut my hand open simply removing it from its packaging. I used a file to remove these burrs, but for an area in which your hand would be you think they'd try to keep those burrs to a minimum. The tsuba was sharper than the blade out of the box.
The blade on mine was skewed to the side straight out of he box.Maybe the ups guy tried parking his truck on it but I doubt it. the handle is out of alignment with the blade at the blade/handle junction and it is a significant, sharp bend (see picture). This made swinging it less effective than it could be and prevented clean slashes from being performed as the blade was pulling out of alignment with the handle.
From owning other Cold Steel machetes I expected the blade to be very crude, which it was. But the issues of the other blades (deep uneven grind marks and "sharp" badly burred edges mixed with fat areas of dull edge) and it was significantly less uniform than on any other cold steel products I have handled to date. The actual side profile of the sword (flat of the blade) is oddly shaped as well, there is a taper from the hilt to the tip, but it isn't a smooth transition, it is fat and then abruptly gets skinnier and almost flat for a ways. This can be seen in the sellers picture along the sharp edge of the blade if you look closely at the picture or in the picture I attached. I did lightly sharpen the blade to remove grind marks/burrs and didn't take a picture before doing this.
While the sheath looks decent on the sword, the way it has a relief around the tsuba that makes unsheathing the thing darned near impossible without bending the belt loop entirely out of the way at a 90 degree angle. The sheathe is designed to be worn across the back I guess which is ridiculous except in movies. Being as samurai warriors and swordsman of old used to try to make a killing strike as they drew their sword (from their hip) this seems very poorly designed to me. Not being able to get a "weapon" out of its sheath makes the weapon useless as such. I understand this was mostly intended to be used on watermelon in the back yard but its still a design flaw. There is no belt loop to wear it properly or ability to switch which side the sling and handle strap can be worn on (sorry lefties, you're stuck with a useless sheath too).
I really, really wanted this to be a decent blade but fell short on all counts. The steel is decent, but it will take a lot of work to properly profile the blade and restore the factory edge to something more usable. The blade being bent at the handle/blade junction makes this sword a real turd to use and makes me think that is a weak point and will fatigue and break at that point in the future.
I'm not a Mall-ninja or a troll, I just wanted to get one of these after having such a great experience with the other, shorter machetes from cold steel. I had to look up what the crossguard was called on katana, so I'm no expert, but for the price point being significantly higher than the other machetes, you're better off getting one of those. I'll probably unload it on some college kid at a yardsale to get some of my money back.
