This last winter was long and unpredictable. I also did a lot of cycling and hiking in the cold. These (along with their counterpart bottoms) made the difference between comfort and not. My just pushing up the sleeves I could regulate heat between long uphill climbs and long downhill descents. I kept a full set of these in my bike bags for when the weather changed drastically during the course of a day out.
It is thin however. Like cheese cloth... May be a star off for that? A third layer garment for a little more warmth without a lot of weight. When you travel a lot you become very weight aware. The more you take and the heavier it is the more you carry. That gets old quick.
9 29 2013 EDIT: This is a pretty good shirt! Hand washed and hung to dry you should be OK. Just what I need when traveling.
On two separate mornings while walking, this and an under shirt, is all I wore for warmth. 55 degrees F. light breeze. Worked up a sweat! I'm thinking this combination and a nylon jacket will be all I need! Easy to wash and dry. Light weight and packable.
Preliminary review based on fit:
Height 6' 0" Weight 207 lbs
Armpit to Wrist: 27"
Collar Bone to Waistline: 22"
I ordered the Tall Medium based on other reviews. The sleeves are fine for length, the fit is form fitting without being tight, feels nice. Oddly, the neck is cut low, almost like a woman's shirt, so if you want something that covers your neck/collar bone, this won't do it.
Update: If I had it to do again, I would not order this shirt. The neck line is low, really low, and it doesn't seem to keep me any warmer than the other shirt I purchased the Tesla Men's Thermal Compression base layer. In fact, I would say the Tesla is a better fit, wicks more efficiently and keeps me warmer in 38-48 degree weather. If I could return this I would, but I've already worn it for a ride. I'll give it to my wife.
What I really like is that when I'm out of the cold weather, I can keep this on underneath my business casual attire in 70-ish degree indoor areas without feeling uncomfortable or too hot (but once I'm inside I'm sedentary - if you're active it would probably feel too warm to keep on all day in higher temps).
The fit being looser than compression-style shirts also helps with all-day comfort. And at the end of the day it doesn't feel as gross as the base layers that are made out of polyester. So I could see wearing this for a couple of days before putting it with the dirty laundry if you're not especially sweaty.
And it's pretty cheap for this sort of clothing! I was looking at expensive merino wool and Under Armuor shirts as alternatives for a base layer, but this works perfectly for me and it's way cheaper. Good stuff all around.
Lastly - a note on fit. I'm a pretty small/average size guy... 5' 7", BMI right in the middle of the average zone, and not especially muscular or flabby. The small size fits me very comfortably, but the sleeves are maybe a tiny bit shorter than I'd like them to be. Based on the other comments,I have a feeling the medium size would be too large to be an improvement.
