ColdPruf Base Layer
We imagine a world where everyone stays warm, regardless of the conditions. Far fetched? Not really. It all starts with your base layer of clothing. We’ve devoted more than a century to developing products that keep you comfortable from chair lift to campfire.
What’s so important about our base layer? Glad you asked. Base layer is the protective layer you wear closest to your skin. It creates the insulating effect that’s needed to keep you comfortable in the cold.
The ColdPruf Base Layer product line has been developed for comfort and warmth in all cold weather environments, whether at home, on the job or enjoying the outdoors.

When it comes to staying warm, there are two factors to consider: what the weather is doing and what the body is doing. Strike a balance between the two and you’re in for real comfort. Thermachoice is about finding that balance.
The color-coded ThermaChoice System consists of a color-coded table based on weather and activity. The ThermaChoice System helps you make an educated and uncomplicated decision on which product is best suited for your particular need.
Merino sheep are an ancient breed that live in New Zealand's southern Alps. Regular sheep wouldn't make it up there. Their wool is breathable in warmer temperatures and insulating in cold. And amazingly soft and lightweight. We use Merino wool because it's breathable and controls moisture. Merino wool also moves with the body and stretches while retaining its shape.
It began with an attitude and a concern. It continues today and tomorrow.
While nothing excites us more than a fresh blanket of white snow, our favorite color is actually green. You can tell by the way we run our business. Today we’re more committed to the environment than ever before. Our production methods are green and our approach to every new endeavor is focused on preserving the health of our planet.
We examined the materials we use in the production of our products and how we manage waste. From the yarn leftover after manufacturing to the pallets we receive from suppliers, everything that can be recycled is recycled.
- We began by evaluating how we manufacture our base layer products. If there was an opportunity to be more efficient and less wasteful, we made a change. Energy efficient light fixtures in all our warehouses? Check. Reducing natural gas consumption to combat global warming? We did that, too. We even adjust the temperature in our offices after hours to conserve energy.
We Respect Cold. Then We Laugh At It.

Super soft, very warm yet tolerant of fairly heavy activity without overheating. Long tail that stays tucked in and sleeves just long enough to cover well my ape-length arms. I'm sold, and plan on buying another set soon!
As for sizing, I'm stuck between size XLT and XXL depending on the manufacturer. I'm 6'2" tall and weigh 240 lbs. I read an Amazon review stating the XXL was too large in the belly whereas the XLT was perfect. That was a correct assessment at least for me. The XLT was just ideal in its fit and length. I'm not sure if it's because of the 2 layers, but the shirt also has a fair amount of flexibility unlike say a similar Duofold dual layer product. I also don't feel any of the itchiness that others have noted. I understand it's a personal thing, but I just don't see how this product can be itchy, as it's very soft on the inside.
Realizing that no single layer is going to keep you warm in extremely cold temperatures helps to evaluate product more objectively. Knowing which products added to your warmth based on how you layered also helps. The layering scheme I used was intended to draw out any sweat but keep in the body heat. I probably could have used this layer over the Cabela's layer with more success, but the UA Cold Gear line fits tighter and would have been a pain to put on over the ColdPruf shirt. The bottom line is that I would recommend this top for anyone needing a thermal or an additional layer. It can be worn lounging around the house or outside on a walk. For reference, I can wear just this shirt and my Eddie Bauer down jacket and Weather Edge shell in 25F to 30F temps and be OK.
This is a dual layer garment with the wool component being in the outer layer. You'd think that'd prevent skin contact with the wool and avoid itching. But the problem is the collar and cuffs are made with the exterior layer material, and they itch. I have other merino wool products that don't bother me but this really does.
You can avoid that by wearing a t-shirt underneath (and folding back the cuffs if the arms are long enough on you) but that defeats the purpose. You shouldn't have to wear a layer under your base layer, it detracts from the performance. And that's why this is ultimately a fail.
I would give it 1 star because of its failure to be a comfortable base layer but I left it at 3 because as an overshirt, it is still comfortable and relatively warm for its weight. But I'm disappointed.
