Update 12/5/15: I just received the LL Bean Lantern. It can't even compare at all to the Coleman! The batteries are held in with a screw in base, the whole unit seems to be great quality, and it has a nice rubberized feel to it instead of just cheap plastic. I think its actually brighter on the lowest setting than my Coleman was on the highest! You don't have to shake it to get it to light, and the switch settings are variable/infinite! Nothing against Amazon, I wish they sold the LL Bean, but that Coleman really sucked!!
I'm mortified, for I originally bought two of these as a gift, Feb 2013, for a family that had a really hard time during a power outage - again, based on reviews. So buyer beware - apparently a nifty little lantern, at a decent price - but only for so long as it works. I bought it as something to have for a power outage - thank goodness I found out how untrustworthy it is before having to rely on it in an emergency. I would strongly suggest avoiding this product, even if it means spending a bit more, for this lantern is no bargain. To sum: Just a cheap cute easily breakable toy.
It requires 4 D batteries, and the light is strong and bright. It feels pretty sturdy, though could break if it falls from a height onto a hard surface. Fortunately even at full price it's still affordable so if that happens I'll get another.
Wouldn't you know, knock on wood, there hasn't been a need for it but I'll be prepared in the Spring when inevitably the thunderstorms rage. No more sitting in the dark or going to bed early because I can't see anything.
Very pleased with this lantern, and I intend to buy my children several for their homes, too.
