I was able to use this product on three occasions with a wood camp fire. The first two times were great, and I love the non-stick surface - although I was disappointed it doesn't crimp the bread closed for pies, which my old one did. The third time we used it was a major disappointment...

We just returned from a weekend of camping, during which we had planned to cook most of our meals using the Coleman Camp Cooker. Unfortunately, the cooker melted before we even cooked one meal! I didn't leave it in the fire long - maybe 2 minutes tops, and it wasn't in the coals or directly in the flame - just hovering above. The only thing that I can figure, is that this was a hotter fire than my previous ones. The first two times, we made dinner right after starting the fire. This time, the fire had been burning for a few hours before we started to cook. Maybe the heat from the coals were just too hot for it to handle? The corner melted right off.

I checked the Coleman website, and all three of the reviewers that have posted there have had the same experience. I noticed this cooker was made of cast aluminum, rather than cast iron - but not knowing the difference between the two, I just assumed it would hold up the same given the purpose. I'm quite positive I didn't notice any warnings or instructions regarding high heat - but it definitely said that it was intended for camp fires.

I guess I missed the memo about not putting the cooker over too much heat. We used them over a relatively tame fire fire pit and was surprised to see them melt. At least a warning would be useful in the future.

We left these in the campfire a little too long and they melted! I didn't think that was even possible. We replaced them with cast iron (instead of cast aluminum) hobo pie cookers we found here on Amazon and the cast iron are much better than these. I'd never waste my money on these again.

I've had this pie iron for a few years, and it was okay. The handles are a little shorter than I'd like (the Rome pie iron I have is several inches longer) and the latch usually slips off on its own. The metal grip isn't great, because it will conduct heat eventually. I prefer a wood grip, but you need to be cautious of burning.
My biggest complaint is that on my most recent camping trip, one pie iron melted. I have always stuck my irons in the fire to burn off any gunk, and this time it turned this iron into a puddle (the Rome iron was fine). The fire wasn't particularly hot, but apparently it was hotter than I realized. Not wanting to waste an opportunity, I left the irons in the fire overnight. The next morning I was left with two warped sticks and no traces of the aluminum pans.
Long story short; Be careful with these. This pie iron is not indestructible and will easily melt if you're not paying attention.

I read comments and decided to go with a square cooker . . . love it, makes great sandwiches, doesn't stick or come out of the sides like the circle shape cooker's had comments on. A "must have" for the camp fire and great price.

This is a disaster waiting to happen, When using it the handle gets very hot which is expected except the latch slides down to the pie iron and and is difficult to slide back and clamp again after checking on the progress. Another bad thing is it does not stay closed properly and the filling leaks out. We've had many of pie irons in the past when camping and never had any problems with the wood handle ones and when closed they matched up tight with no leakage.
Another issue was the food tasted like burnt iron and was not edible, Washed the unit again and still had a funny taste and smell. Would return it if I could!

I put it in the fire to prepare it for first use and the weld on the hinge melted off before we even got to cook in it. It's a good thing boy scouts are prepared and we had a contingency dinner plan or we would have been eating un-toasted personal pizza pockets that night.

I really enjoy cooking with camp cookers like these, make something small and warn to carry you over for like an hour while out camping. They are easy to use and very portable for any camp out (bit heavy for backpacking), but of course they do have their downsides.

These devices need a special fire to cook with, you can just use any camp fire, there needs to be somewhere that is not too hot that can give heat evenly all across the surface otherwise one side will be very burned while the other is underdone. This isn't the top or bottom, one of those sides burns due to you not paying attention or the fire being too hot, it is front and back as one side is usually closer to the fire than the other.

All in all an good product, and a fun one if you are going out camping with friends or family.
