We just returned from a weekend of camping, during which we had planned to cook most of our meals using the Coleman Camp Cooker. Unfortunately, the cooker melted before we even cooked one meal! I didn't leave it in the fire long - maybe 2 minutes tops, and it wasn't in the coals or directly in the flame - just hovering above. The only thing that I can figure, is that this was a hotter fire than my previous ones. The first two times, we made dinner right after starting the fire. This time, the fire had been burning for a few hours before we started to cook. Maybe the heat from the coals were just too hot for it to handle? The corner melted right off.
I checked the Coleman website, and all three of the reviewers that have posted there have had the same experience. I noticed this cooker was made of cast aluminum, rather than cast iron - but not knowing the difference between the two, I just assumed it would hold up the same given the purpose. I'm quite positive I didn't notice any warnings or instructions regarding high heat - but it definitely said that it was intended for camp fires.
My biggest complaint is that on my most recent camping trip, one pie iron melted. I have always stuck my irons in the fire to burn off any gunk, and this time it turned this iron into a puddle (the Rome iron was fine). The fire wasn't particularly hot, but apparently it was hotter than I realized. Not wanting to waste an opportunity, I left the irons in the fire overnight. The next morning I was left with two warped sticks and no traces of the aluminum pans.
Long story short; Be careful with these. This pie iron is not indestructible and will easily melt if you're not paying attention.
Another issue was the food tasted like burnt iron and was not edible, Washed the unit again and still had a funny taste and smell. Would return it if I could!
These devices need a special fire to cook with, you can just use any camp fire, there needs to be somewhere that is not too hot that can give heat evenly all across the surface otherwise one side will be very burned while the other is underdone. This isn't the top or bottom, one of those sides burns due to you not paying attention or the fire being too hot, it is front and back as one side is usually closer to the fire than the other.
All in all an good product, and a fun one if you are going out camping with friends or family.

We managed to bake a couple of apple pies before the fire warped and melted the pie maker into a useless piece of $15 trash. It won't close. It wouldn't seal. Read morePublished 19 hours ago by Calamity Jane

Good quality. Makes a good edge seal and gives great results when using it. I would like to see the handles be 4 to 8 inches longer, though.Published 9 months ago by blatantsubtleties
