I love this lantern- good light output, compact and comes w/ carrying chain. One drawback- it's very hard to find mantels for. I visited 5 local stores to find replacement mantels, before I finally found them at Kmart. I recommend buying mantels when ordering this product (to save money on shipping) or check availability locally first. Coleman Mantels #51

I wanted a small lantern since all dual fuel/two mantle lanterns I've seen (except the one exponent model) are bulky and clumsy inside those cases. I've rarely needed a lantern to be on high but I wasn't sure if this was going to be bright enough at that setting. Well, it's brighter than I thought it was going to be and allows me to do everything I would I have done with a bigger lantern at an upper-middle setting.

Having a metal guard around the globe is great too. I store this (and the other one I have) with all my gear in a duffel bag and even though it gets shuffled around at times, nothing happens. The chain handle is also great for hanging it on a rope without having to untie that and feed it through the handle since either side can be detached from the globe.

This single mantle lamp provides plenty of light, runs for more hours than I counted on a 16 oz can, packs great and uses easily available mantles. I have two. Many department and sporting good stores carry replacement globes. Once used, all mantles damage easily. A single mantle lamp saves money.

This is a nice lantern. I agree with other reviewers that the threads could have been made stronger, but then it is an inexpensive unit. Evidently to keep the weight down, and for corrosion resistance, the base is made of a zinc alloy. That is all good, but a cast-in steel thread or a helicoil could have been employed in the design.

The instructions were very sketchy. It says to "install the mantle". Uhh, this is my first lantern, my first mantle. By the way, what is a mantle? Anyway, I just slipped it over the post and hoped for the best. There were no strings to tie. And the product description says that to light, you must use matches (a lighter). However, the unit I got has a piezo-electric starter, which so far works nicely. And of course, since I did not know how to install the mantle, I thought the electrodes for the starter (which were not supposed to exist) might have been a place to tie-off the strings that appear on the photos but did not exist on the product.

It was hard to get the mantle to light the first time, and I even blew the lid off (That was scary, but cool). But subsequently, the starter works very nicely. I ordered a lighter for it, but I won't be using it.

The lantern is small and light weight. It will only get intermittent use from me, so it may last a long time. Don't look at the flame for very long. You'll be seeing the sun for quite a while.

Addendum: In case you are wondering which replacement mantles to get, these are the originals: Coleman Company 2Pk #51 Lant Mantle 51A104 Lantern Accessories - no strings to tie-off.

I have owned and used Coleman lanterns for as long as I can remember. I have always used the old two mantle lanterns before now. Unfortunately, my last one finally got too beat up to use. When I was looking around on what to replace it with I came across this one mantle unit. I was drawn to it because of the compact nature of it and the ability to store it in smaller spaces. My only concern was that it was not going to put off enough light with one mantle. That concern was quickly put to rest after lighting the unit up the first time.

The lantern arrived well packaged and the instructions were easy to follow. Installing the mantle, burning it, and placing the globe on all went quickly and easily. The mantle does seem like it is fairly safe inside the unit, so I am not really all that concerned that it will get damaged while in storage, but I did do as other reviewers requested and ordered extras through Amazon (I have checked in stores since doing so, and the other's are correct, they are no where to be found in the local stores).

I highly recommend this lantern, and I look forward to using it for many years.

It is difficult to determine which lantern is actually best for your camping needs. This model uses `slip-on' mantles and matches, meaning you have to fuss with strings, but it only weighs about one pound for backpacking. The single mantle is plenty of light for night use. For purists, this might be the best, but I purchased the "Coleman Northstar Instastart Tube-Mantle Propane Lantern", which has two mantles and they are the `clip-on' style, which is so much easier than tying on mantles. However, it does weigh about four pounds. For pure lightweight backpacking, I'd go with this model, but if you can stand three more pounds or are car-camping, I'd recommend the "Northstar InstaStart Tube-Mantle Lantern", which also has metal globe guards. Either way, Coleman is the best.

I have used Coleman lanterns and stoves for 35 years. I have never had a problem with any product that could not be fixed by a trip to a local hardware store. This little lantern is the best thing ever. We use several lanterns around the site and this lite does a great job and is very cheap and obviously packs well. Double mantle lites are great for doing surgery or reading fine print but this little one does fine for everything else!!!!!!
