About the same time this item arrived, I purchased a new grill for the back deck - so, I've used it only once so far - just to be sure it worked. I was able to properly cook a 1" steak to medium rare on the first try with one flip. If you intend to carry on the road (Tail-gating, RV'ing, Trucking, etc.), you may want to purchase (or fabricate) a non-flammable/non-melting carrying case (with separate compartment for the gas tank), as it will stay hot to the touch for longer than you may wish to wait for it to cool. Also, I have some concern about odor/aroma if I don't clean the unit after every use - as I plan to use it on the road in a semi-tractor. Other than that, I highly recommend!
I found Ace hardware part no 5300223 Draw Tight Catch to benjust what I was looking for.
I drilled out the rivets holding the old latch in place, enlarged the holes a bit, the pop riveted the upper mechanism in place.
After that, I positioned the lower mechanism, drilled two holes, two more pop rivets and - problem solved! The new latch is probably what the factory should have done.
A super easy fix if you're even marginally handy.
BTW, this was the 2nd grill received, never even got to use the 1st because it would not latch and was returned.
After done, let it cool and then clean up is fairly easy. I used paper towels to wipe off excess grease and then good old soap and water. A light interior wipe down with Canola oil will help with future cleanings. The grill is designed to keep any grease from dripping on the burner and holds any liquid drippings in the bottom pan. The grill, while not quite 'cast iron' heavy, is heavier than I expected and is stick resistant. I prefer to use wooden spatulas on any cook ware labeled as 'non-stick' and have not had problems to date.
Prior to your first use, I recommend running this on 'low-medium' setting for about 15 minutes to remove any factory smells. A very light coating of Canola oil will help preserve the finishes on the inside when you are done. I do not recommend running this on 'high' for any length of time with the lid closed. The temperatures could get high enough to damage interior surfaces, especially in the case of an unexpected grease fire.
