The biggest problem is that the best batteries (EBL D Size 10000mAh NiMH Rechargeable) are too long to fit. I was able to fix the problem by removing the battery door and sanding down the plastic contact plate by about 1mm. It was easy to do, but only for the DIY crowd.
I'm going to add a charging port too.
However, ON MY SECOND time bringing out the lantern on a trip I was camping with some boys from my church and one of them tried to pick it up. Instead of using the handle he tried to pick it up from the side, obviously the flashlights came off and the lantern hit the ground. The whole bottom hatch broke spilling the batteries onto the ground. I collected them and tried to simply put it back together only to find that EVERY SINGLE ONE of the clasps used to keep the batteries in there compartment broke off.
I am so upset! The lantern is beyond repair after just one drop. I know the child did not mean to drop it and that it is damaged to due that however when you spend over $100 on a lantern you expect it to be able to take a few bumps.
That being said, it is a handy light and lights up our large kitchen very well during power outages. The stand on each of the panels is quite useful if you need to keep your hands free.
At first, the two slim sidelights that snap off the lantern to provide independently-powered light panels worked really well - just detach them, tap the black button, and they turn on and provide bright light. After 6 months of very light, occasional use, they no longer work unless connected to the main lantern. While operational, all of the lights flicker and change in brightness constantly, as if their power source is not consistent (which could be the case, given I've used it so little the same D batteries inside are the same ones I initially put in when I first got it). They sort of stabilize when the lantern is not being moved, but their brightness is never consistent - tapping it will cause them to snap to a different brightness level.
Overall, it's a merely okay lantern. It does produce light, which is nice, but in an extremely clunky, inelegant manner. The fact that it has no built in Lithium-ion battery, nor any kind of similar option, and that the sidelights no longer function independent of the central housing is super disappointing. I wish I had realized that before I purchased it.
We often lose power in hurricanes for a day or two and this is a lifesaver.
